Your 5 Worst Characters!

Ok, so we have all have favourite characters, but who are your 5 WORST characters, in your opinion? This can be from any book, LOTR, Silm, HoME. Mine are:

Bill Ferny
Feanor
Galadriel
Manwe
Morgoth

Have a nice time choosing, it could be quite interesting to see which character is mentioned most!

eleanor_niphredil 02-14-2003 11:04 AM

Grima
bill ferny
all nine nazgul
faramir from the movie
elrond

Naldoriathil 02-14-2003 11:16 AM

Yeah, actually I agree with the Faramir one. Keep 'um coming people!

Tenduriel 02-14-2003 11:19 AM

erm, who was bill ferny again?

Naldoriathil 02-14-2003 11:23 AM

A Man of Bree, a minor agent of Saruman in the north during the War of the Ring. Very suspicious character, and he gave me chills down my spine.

LePetitChoux 02-14-2003 11:53 AM

So far (five 12ths through Silm. ~ Shock! Horror!)
1.Fëanor
2.Ungoliant
3.Film Faramir
4.Shagrat (or was it Gorbag? - you know the one I mean - the horrible one (great description to help identify a certain particular orc, I know))
5.The 276th orc from the left, 3rd row outside the Black Gate (after Aragorn and Company come and have a "friendly chat" and then the Eagles come-you know the story)...I feel he wasn't developed well enough.

Inderjit Sanghera 02-14-2003 12:43 PM

1. Sam
2. Denethor
3. Gaffer Gamgee
4. Turgon
5. Master of town in 'Tal-Elmar'

Nuinatariel 02-14-2003 01:03 PM

1. film Faramir
2. Frodo (but only in RotK)
3. Bill Ferny
4. Fëanor
5. Gríma Wormtongue

Rynoah, the Overly-Happy 02-14-2003 01:08 PM

It's been a while since I actually read the books, so pardon me if this list is fuzzy.

1. Denethor: though I pity the man, I hate him. A lot.
2. Saruman
3. Any of the orcs or Uruk-Hai
4. Grima Wormtongue
5. Arwen: for some reason... I just didn't like her

I would go so far as to say the movie portrayal of Faramir is my all-time hate-list topper, but I actually love the character Faramir and try my hardest to no longer associate the movie with him.

eleanor_niphredil 02-14-2003 01:27 PM

the revised list, in no particular order.

1- faramir in the film
2- Arwen in the film
3- Bill Ferny
4- Denethor
5- The "What about their legs?" orc.

Eomer of the Rohirrim 02-14-2003 02:59 PM

I cannot understand you people. You have mentioned so many great and fascinating characters here.

Naldoriathil 02-14-2003 03:06 PM

Ok, Eomer of the Rohirrim. Why don't you tell us your 5 worst characters. The choices are people's opinion and we are all entitled to an opinion I believe? Who would you choose?

Barodir 02-14-2003 03:29 PM

No real order:
-(Movie)Faramir~only in TTT, he may get better in RotK.
-Arwen~in the books, she doesn't do anything that would make me like her, and she's in the movies a little too much.
-(Movie)Haldir~why'd he die???
-Bill Ferny~'nuff said...
-(Movie)Eomer~for some reason, I just couldn't stand him in TTT. He was sorta shoved down our throats with little back story. Hopefully he'll be better in RotK like Faramir.

I realised I'd left someone very important out, so here is my new list:
Top 5 Most Annoying Characters
(No Particular order)
  • Aragorn ("Oh, did I happen to mention I'm the future king?" "I'm king, did you know that?" "I'm royalty, so I'm going to proclaim it to the world")
  • Fëanor (I'm just going to go all egoďstical because I have a paranoia over my own work, and lead lots of people away from Gods")
  • Film "the Ring must go to Gondor" Faramir (He is too wrong!)
  • Book Faramir (too righteous and too lucky)
  • Denethor (I just love optimists such as him, don't you?)

elven maiden Earwen 02-14-2003 04:34 PM

Naldoriathil 02-15-2003 08:45 AM

Excellent, I see that Faramir from the film appears quite a lot! Very interesting results, are there any more you don't like?

Brinniel 02-15-2003 12:59 PM

Not in any particular order:

1. Fëanor
2. Eöl
3. Bill Ferny
4. Wormtongue
5. Saruman

Peri 02-15-2003 04:23 PM

When you say 'worst characters', do you mean charcters we didn't like, or characters that just didn't fit into the stories? Anyway, the characters I liked the least runs as follows(not in any particular order):

Denethor
Lotho
Bill Ferny
Boromir
Ungoliant

Finwen 02-15-2003 04:29 PM

Nothing beats a good old list....

And, so as to be nice (even though this is 'worst' characters) I've included one of each race of Middle Earth...

1. Grishnakh
2. Saeros
3. Thorin
4. Ted Sandyman
5. Isildur

dragoneyes 02-15-2003 04:44 PM

In no particular order:
1. Bilbo - not sure why, he just does.
2. Gollum/Smeagol - please, no one stick up for him
3. Bill Ferny - coward
4. Galadriel - I'm going to give you some hope but make sure that you know it's hopeless whether I do or not.
5. Denethor - he's so patronising

There, that's me done.

Demloth of Dol Amroth 02-15-2003 06:43 PM

Maros An Doramor 02-15-2003 06:52 PM

In no order:

Denethor : I cannot STAND pathetic characters!

Faramir: I'm a Boromir fan, and frankly Faramir made Boromir look like the more incapable son.

Sam : He's bearable at the end of TTT and beginning of FotR, but when he's with Frodo he plain annoys me!

Bergil : I dunno why. Just don't like the boy.

The Uruk that shot Bromir in FotR (Movie) : Damn that coward!! Why couldn't he just duel it out fair and square?!? Grrrr

Pallando B.C 02-15-2003 08:21 PM

This is in no particular order:

- Fëanor
- Ungoliant
- Celegorm -(In fact all the Sons of Fëanor)
- Carcharoth
- Maeglin

The list goes on.

MLD-Grounds-Keeper-Willie 02-15-2003 08:33 PM

In no order:
1. Arwen
2. Arwen
3. Arwen
4. Arwen
5. ...hmmm, what was that character....Oh yeah, Arwen.

Oh, this is about the books, sorry, new list. And in no particular order either.

1. Sam
2. Arwen
3. The Mouth of Sauron
4. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins
5. Haldir or Elrond; I can't decide which

Elanor 02-16-2003 10:39 AM

Are people picking characters they dislike (as in, wouldn't want to spend time with them) or characters they think are badly written? I can hardly think of any characters that I wouldn't want in the book, the baddies and dislikeable ones are essential, and add to the tension. But I do find Celeborn very dull. He never seems to do much, just stands around in the background muttering the odd line here and there.

LadyElbereth 02-16-2003 10:47 AM

Denethor
Lobelia-Sackville Baggins
Bill Ferny
Feanor
Ungoliant

Naldoriathil 02-16-2003 11:16 AM

Yeah, just characters you dislike. Up to you. It's not very serious I know, but what the hell!

Nuinheledien 02-16-2003 12:36 PM

This is great, getting to see which characters people like the least.

#1 Sauron (sp, i can never spell his name right!)
#2 Saruman
#3 Wormtounge
#4 Denethor
#5 The orcs and ura-hai

Mine are all the baddies!

Eressië Ailin 03-21-2003 11:51 AM

Arwen
Tom Bombadil
Galadriel
The Gaffer (he just creeps me out)
Boromir

Thalioncairwen 03-21-2003 02:09 PM

1. Arwen
2. Arwen
3. Arwen
4. Boromir
5. Eowyn

Armadoin 03-21-2003 03:13 PM

1. Gollum- His insane gibbering in the movie made me dislike him even more.
2. Feanor- Just the way I envisioned him; It creeped me out.
3. Saruman- Anyone who looks into a palantir is disturbing.
4. Lobelia Baggins- what a *****.
5.Tom Bombadil- His excessive cheeriness is about enough to make me gag.

Cherie Centaur 03-21-2003 07:28 PM

Oooo, I can have fun . Here goes:

Denethor- Favoring Boromir, and basically telling Faramir to DIE!!!!

Aragorn- Going around telling who he is and saving everyone (not that I mind him saving Faramir, but he treats your average person like a stupid child)

Saeros- that racist elf, if it wasn't for him Turin wouldn't have left Doriath

Anarion & Erendis- they're just screwed up!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 03-21-2003 07:45 PM

Hm, in no particular order

1. Elladan and Elrohir (they're don't have any personality and they run together)
2. Ar-Pharazon (he's just a nasty old man!)
3. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins (the scene I get most angry about in all of LOTR is when she shows up at Bag End early and demands the keys)
4. Ghan-Buri-Ghan (annoying)
5. Haldir (he's really quite awful in the book, smug, and his brothers Rumil and Orophin are worse)

But I do want to comment that I think the movie version just butchered Faramir's character... gr.

-Sophia

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-21-2003 07:50 PM

You don't even see Rumil and Orophin more than once, don't judge them. I happen to quite like the three bros....What do you people have against Faramir in the movie? He was way off from the book, I'll admit that, but the acting by David Wenham was superb

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 03-21-2003 08:09 PM

*laughs* Good greif... I didn't realize I was going to be killed...

I didn't criticize the acting, friend, just the way the character was written. I agree that he was very well played, I just would have liked it vastly better if David Wenham played Faramir the way Tolkien made him, not the way Jackson made him.

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-21-2003 08:17 PM

Oh and I forgot about actually answering the question. So here goes:
Oh by the way, I am extremely partial towards Elves, so I have been (literally) banging my head against the wall every time you people mentioned one of them. No, my parents are not home. ;-)
  • Lobelia Sackville Baggins. That old ****.
    Beregond
That kid Haleth, in the movie.
    Hama, in the movie.
    Gimli, in the movie.

All the Elves were great!

Okay, some of you are going to get mad at some of my choices, but here it goes...

Here is my list (In no particular order)

1.Faramir-in book or movie, I didn't like him
2.Shelob-didn't like her, too scary
3.Balrog of Moria, and any other Balrog in the books
4.Morgoth-Very mean evil thing, did not like him, and of course he never really gets defeated
5.Gollum (Ok, I know that there is a lot of people who love Gollum out there, but I don't, and remember everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just did not like him, I knew he was evil the entire time, and I know that the ring would have never been distroyed without him, but I still did not like him. He was just simply annoying to me. Though I would never want him to be removed from the book)
