Just a silly question

Hullo! This is my last day of the school year. So I wondered how would you say "free at last!" in elvish?

Morquesse 06-14-2002 09:14 PM

You know what, I'm not sure, and I'm not sure where to look. Though You would probably find the answer if you asked in the Language forum.

Thank Eru almighty, we are free at last!

I've been out of school for over a week now. We start before Labor Day here.

Starbreeze 06-15-2002 10:27 AM

Hang on, I'll get out my dictionary and see if its there.

I'm free in a week - forever!

Ithaeliel 06-15-2002 10:49 AM

Forever!!!?? So you must be out of college! Congratulations!

Morai 06-15-2002 11:27 AM

Hmm.... I guess I might check the Language forum. I got out last wendsday.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 06-15-2002 11:33 AM

<font color="gold"> I got out on May 24th.

Morai 06-15-2002 11:40 AM

May 24!? Man, I guess nothing is fair in life (or should I say death )

VanimaEdhel 06-15-2002 03:14 PM

Well...to free = leith
now = sii'
after = ale'
so = ikotane
long = an...so:

"Ron leithner lye sii', ale' ikotane an"
They freed us now, after so long

Or...just Ron leithner lye sii': they freed us now...

free is leitha, so...

Lye naar ie' tella
That's LITERALLY: We are free at last...

take your pick (or make a combination)!

Boring fact, English schools don't break up until July 18th.

Gimli Son Of Gloin 06-16-2002 12:43 AM

I culminate from the sixth grade on the 20th. There is this ceremony, and I'm doing a viola solo in front of three hundered people!!!

Morai 06-16-2002 10:03 PM

VanimaEdhel, thanks for the translation!!
I think I'll put that one in my signature.
(when I have time!)

Yerniel Vénea 06-16-2002 11:07 PM

After doing some research, because I don't recognize what VanimaEdhel posted as a translation as Quenya, I found a different result.

the verb to free is not what you'd want because free in this context is used as an adjective. We (subject) are (verb) free (adjective). If you were saying "we free..." then the grammatical dissection would be we (sub) free(verb). If you wanted to say you were in the act of doing the freeing then you would say "we are freeing..." and the dissection of that would be we (sub) are (auxiliery verb) freeing (gerund). Wow, i probably confused you a lot! Sorry just want you to understand. Languages are definitely more complex than one realizes!

Anyway, the Quenya verb "to free" is "fainu-" fyi.

the adjective "free" as in "we are free" is "latin(a)" you would need to have plural agreement, if you are using the sub "we" and not if you are using "I." so use "latin" for "I" and "latinė" for "we"

the interjection "at last!" is "yallumė"

now the subjects are a different story. If you are using "I" then the ending you would want is "-nyė" but just an "-n" can do. So with the verb "na-" to be it would be "nan" or "nanyė." With we it is way more difficult. If you are including everyone, you'd use the "we inclusive" which is "-lmė" if you are using the "we exclusive" then it is "-mmė." If you are talking to another person and you mean to say, the two of us, it is "-lv-." I assume you want to say "we are free at last" as in the whole student body. So I would say: "Naralmė latinė yallumė!" and you would stress the the phrase: NarALmė LAtinė YALlumė.

We exclusive: "Narammė latinė yallumė!" Stress: NarAMmė LAtinė YALlumė

two of us: "Naralvė...."
Stress: NarALvė...

I am free...: "Nan latin yallumė!" or "Nanyė latin yallumė!"
Stress: 1st syllable of every word

Ok, there are plenty of grammatical things I did not discuss because I now assume I have bored you to death or confused you beyond repair. I have only tried to help!
