What is Sauron?

I know, this sounds really, really stupid, but what exactly is Sauron? I`ve what he was, but forgot. (and I call myself an LotR expert! ) Please help! Thanks a bunch!

Besides a big red eye?

Actually, I beleive he is one of the demi-god things (you'll have to forgive me, it's been a while). Not the Valar, the bad ones. I dunno, someone help me out here.

"'The Abhorred' (in Sindarin called Gorthaur); greatest of the servants of Melkor, in his origin a Maia of Aulė.'The Abhorred' (in Sindarin called Gorthaur); greatest of the servants of Melkor, in his origin a Maia of Aulė." (Silmarillion, Index)

Read the books or check the Encyclopedia of Arda ( http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/ ) for more information.

To my best knowing Sauron is just another evil Maia like the Balrog. A servant of Morgoth and a demi-god to the valar.

I think Sharkś hit the nail on the head there. He was a Maia of the Vala whom Melkor(Morgoth) currupted to his evil will. If my memory severs he was a fire spirt, which would explain the eye but i could be wrong on this.

Yeah, Sharkū hit the nail.

Hmm...i always thought the Red Eye of Sauron was a symbol in where Sauron was able to keep watch over the lands of Middle-earth...

Yeah, that's exactly what the Eye is.
Sauron could take on a lot of different shapes like all the Ainur, but the Eye is not one of those, it is meant to be a symbol.

Oh now i see, the all seeing eye. Just like the way Melkor could see everything(well almost) The S man is making the same gesture

(going to the original question)

Sauron is a maia spirit (or something like that)
in that book about that other ring

i probably was no help, but what can I say???

Eol, the initial question of the post was already addressed and answered in its fullness by other members. There was no need to add to this thread.
