Shall we chess...?
I just thought... If they made a LOTR chess game, what(or who) would each piece be?
Here are my picks. White: King-Aragorn Queen-Arwen Bishops-Gandalf,Frodo Knights-Eomer,Faramir Rooks-Minas Tirith,Helm's Deep Pawns-the other fellowshipers,Eowyn,?Elrond? Black: King-Sauron's Eye Queen-Shelob Bishops-Saruman,Gollum Knights-Lurtz,Mouth of Sauron Rooks-Barad-dur, Isengard Pawns-orcs |
They actually HAVE a LOTR chess game! I saw it in Target once; Mother-dear wouldn't buy it for me, though. I can't remember who was what piece, but I think Aragorn was the White King; and I know Galadriel was one of the queens. I think. It was before Christmas when I saw it, so I can't remember now. It looked nice, though.

yeh they have one I sell it where I work...Seen it many times
Actually they have about 5 of them that I've seen but we only sell One, The other ones I saw were at specialty shops with big pieces, and it cost like $80 per each side, (so 160$) just for pieces, and then 150$ for the board...so yeh, they were all REALLY expensive. <font size=1 color=339966>[ 2:15 PM January 23, 2004: Message edited by: Armetiel ] |
This is an interesting idea, but not a book discussion, so I'm moving the thread to the Novices and Newcomers forum. Please continue there!

My chess game would look like this:
~*~ WHITE ~*~ King: Aragorn (well he has to ) Queen: Arwen (see above) Bishops: Gandalf and Elrond Knights: Frodo and Sam Rooks: Mina Tirith and Helm's Deep (or Lothlorien and Imladris) Pawns: Eomer, Faramir, Boromir, Theoden, Gimli, Legolas, Pippin, Merry ~*~ BLACK ~*~ King: Sauron himself (or perhaps even Morgoth *shudder* ) Queen: Shelob Bishops: The Witch-King, The Mouth of Sauron Knights: Saruman, Durin's Bane Rooks: Barad-Dur, Minas Morgul Pawns: Ugluk, Bill Ferny, The Watcher in the Pool, Grond, Grima, Shagrat, Statue at The Tower of Cirith Ungol, mmhmm I can't come up with an 8th black pawn, perhaps we could use Eowyn here or even Bombadil? (only kidding ) Greetings, EfR |
How about a Silmarillion chess set?
~White~ King-Thingol Queen-Melian Bishops-Turgon, Finrod Felagund Knights-Eomer,Faramir Rooks-Menegroth, Gondolin Pawns-Hurin, Turin, Huor, Tuor, Beren, Luthien, Earendil, Huan, Barahir (although it seems an injustice to call any of them 'pawns' ) ~Black~ King-Morgoth Queen-Ungoliant (although Sauron would seem to fit better, being second in command, it just seems wrong to call him a Queen) Bishops-Sauron, Glaurung Knights-Gothmog, Carcharoth Rooks- Angband, Taur-nu-Fuin Pawns-The Uruloki, the Orcs, etc. <font size=1 color=339966>[ 5:40 PM January 23, 2004: Message edited by: Lord of Angmar ] |
A silmarillion chess set?! That would be SO cool! I would definitely get one if it were made available.

A Silmarillion chess set would be very cool, although I'm afraid there wouldn't be much market for it. I shall not even attempt to design one . As for LOTR though here is my version:
White King: Aragorn (what else) Queen: Arwen (again, what else) Bishops: Legolas and Gimli Nights: Gandalf and Boromir Rooks: Minas Tirith and Helms Deep Pawns: soldiers of Gondor and possibly Rohan Black King: Eye of Sauron (on Barad-dûr) Queen: Shelob (nothing else really works) Bishops: Mouth of Sauron and Gothmog (the freaky orc at Pelonnor Fields) Nights: Witch King of Angmar and Sauroman Rooks: Minis Morgul and Orthanc Pawns: Orcs of course! The only thing I don't like is no Frodo and Sam, although they weren't really doing the fighting. |
This reminds me of a part of C.S. Lewis' The Voyage of the Dawn Treader:
Quote:
player 2: Aww. player 1: I think I have an advantage playing black. player 2: Why? player 1: Well, you keep on sending your Frodo-bishop straight to my queen, for a start. player 2: You mean... that's not how I should play?... Huh? |
I think it would be cool to have a different set for each important race. Men, Elves, and Evil in general.
Men: K-Aragorn Q-Arwen B-Boromir and Faramir N-Eomer and Eowyn R-Helms Deep and Minas Tirith Elves: K-Elrond Q-Galadriel B-Legolas and Haldir N-Glorfindel and Elrohir (I am runing out of Ideas.) R-Rivendel and Lorien Evil: K-Sauron Q-Saruman B-Gothmog and Lurtz(the one Aragorn kills anyway). N-The mouth and The witch King R-Orthanc and Barad-dur I have got a rather cheap plastic Lotr chess set which is not bad. It is only on the characters from the first two books however as it came out at the same time as the second film. |
I have some friends who have an LOTR chess set, and the white pawns are all Sam. All eight of them. I found that amusing, considering the part of the Appendices on the FOTR:EE DVD where Sean Astin tlaks about playing with a miniature version of himself who was better at chess, and then it shows a scary picture of just that. How much more amusing it would be if they (Sean A. and his scale double, wearing a mask of Sean's face) were playing using an LOTR chess set, with eight Sams as pawns!

I have the ROTK chess set from Target and here is how it is.
White: King-Aragorn (Duh!) Queen-Arwen Bishops-Gandalf and Frodo Knights-Merry and Pippin Rooks-Gimil and Prince Legolas (I say prince because he is wearing the cornation outfit. ) Pawn-Sam Black: King-Sauron Queen-Witch King (I don't think he would like this postion) Bishops-Gollum Knights-Warg riders Rooks-Saurman and Grima Pawns-Orcs |
Chess we shall.
Below are my selections: WHITE: King - Aragorn Queen - Arwen Bishops - Gandalf & Elrond Knights - Legolas & Gimli Rooks - Frodo & Samwise Pawns - Merry, Pippin, Eowyn, Eomer, Boromir, Faramir, Tom Bombadil, Treebeard BLACK: King - Sauron Queen - Shelob Bishops - Saruman & The Witch King Knights - Lurtz & Gothmog Rooks - Gollum & Grima Pawns - Nazgul, Ugluk, Bill Ferny, Shagrat, Trolls, Orcs, Balrogs, Wargs. |
