Streets named after LOTR!!!

I have a friend that lived in San Jose, CA and she lived in an area that was named after LOTR characters!!

How funny is that!! Shows how much influence the books have on society.

Here is the link since I dunno if I can get the map image to show:

MAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a list of some of the streets in that area:

Bilbo Ct.
Brandybuck Way
Theoden Ct.
Isengard Ct.
Angmar Ct.
Eldamar Ct.

And some others I am not 100% sure are from LOTR....

I've always wanted the opportunity to name a street, and if I did, I would also name it after LotR characters. Hey, if anyone else could name a street after something LotR-related, what would it be called? I would probably call something Helm's Deep, or maybe Pellanor Fields.

Lhunbelethiel 06-27-2002 06:02 PM

I don't think I'd want to live on Angmar Ct., though! (that's one of the streets)

The Barrow-Wight 06-27-2002 06:02 PM

That's pretty cool. Check out the picture at the bottom of this screen. Its a real street sign in Thenamir's neighborhood.

burrahobbit 06-27-2002 06:15 PM

There is an edition with Lorien Way and a bunch of other stuff. I'll get a scan of a map pretty soon.

Joy 06-27-2002 06:48 PM

Well, there's more.
 • Shadowfax Drive
 • Bilbo Drive
 • Anborn Road
 • Brandywine Drive
 • Umbarger Rd (comes from Umbar)
 • Woodelf Dr
 • Barrow Ct
 • Anbor Square

BTW, we have a section in our town named after Robin Hood.

Birdland 06-27-2002 07:33 PM

Barrow Court"??? Do those poor people know what a "barrow" is? It's like saying you live on Mausoleum Drive!

(Birdie shakes head over the thought processes of suburban development planners.)

Uialellethwen 06-27-2002 07:41 PM

I'm not sure if there are any in my neighborhood, although... I don't live in this one city close by, but I've been there. In that city, there are a bunch of streets named after LOTR in one area. I didn't realize that until I read the book, though. (I read it all the time. LOTR rules!) The neighborhood is kinda trashy, mostly run down looking condos, but they have those names... It's kinda cool.

Arwen Imladris 06-27-2002 08:21 PM

Wow! That is WAY COOL!!! None of the streets in my little town are have cool names, they are all named after explorers (champlain), or scientests (brockhouse), and we have like, two tree names.(Birch, Poplar) Oh well! Cool map!

Lhunbelethiel 06-27-2002 10:19 PM

I'm planning on visiting that area in August for a party, so I will try to take pictures and post them here. I wouldn't want to live on Bilbo Ct. because the name, to the uninitiated, sounds a bit dirty. hehe... But Lorien and Rivendell would make pretty street names. Yeah, you have to wonder what the planners of that neighborhood were thinking! It's nice to know that Tolkien's work has permeated so much of society, though.

Lindolirian 06-28-2002 12:39 AM

Ummm yeah, i don;t know any street names, but this one skiing place in Michigan that I go to has skiing runs with LotR names. The Greenway is an easy. Bag Shot Row is Medium. Upper and Lower Longbottoms are the two longest and my favorite runs at medium as well. The two hard or blck diamond hills are White Downs and Sunlending. Its the coolest place.

NazgulNumber10 06-28-2002 08:27 PM

well there is a real river brandywine.

Orofacion of the Vanyar 06-29-2002 02:21 AM

Well recently I was driving out in the country and came across a sign that read "Welling Hall". I know it's not a street name, but still. What was funny was that behind the sign, there was nothing but trees.

I must say, I was tempted to stop and say hi to Treebeard.

The Barrow-Wight 06-29-2002 06:58 AM

Remember to take pictures of these great signs when you see them. They would make great additions to the site!

Lhunbelethiel 06-30-2002 12:33 PM

I will definitely try!! Can I send them as JPEG's? Thanks.

The Barrow-Wight 06-30-2002 12:41 PM

Sure! JPGs are always the best because they are small (file size).

Random hobbit *talking to others*- Don't mind Nev, she's a little crazy.

Lush 06-30-2002 08:01 PM

Endor is another name for Middle Earth.
Oh, and if I could name any street after LOTR, I would definitely have Lothiriel Lane, in memory of yet another mostly neglected female character.

Airedae 06-30-2002 10:03 PM

Im glad someone made this post....cause it gives me the excuse to tell everyone that I named the road i live on Rivendell Rd. My father left me some land in his will and when I built my home there I realized as I was paving the cement walk up to my home that I needed to name the small road that goes up into my property. I named it Rivendell because of the nice wooded area around it. I was going to name if Mirkwood Ln but theres this pretty water spring below my property that glows at night when the moon hits it right...reminded me of Rivendell...so walla..Rivendell it was and Rivendell it always will be...=)

Lhunbelethiel 06-30-2002 11:21 PM

Airedae, That's really a cool idea to name that little road Rivendell!! I like that!!

Hey, in what city is that map of yours, Burrahobbit ?

Airedae 07-01-2002 08:36 PM

Thanks....I thought it was a pretty good idea myself when I named it...=) The whole area has the feel of Rivendell..its peaceful and thats really why i named it that....but thanks for liking it....im glad someone does, my family hates the name....I wouldnt of named it anything else..it just fits...

burrahobbit 07-01-2002 09:54 PM

Oklahoma City.

Kuruharan 07-01-2002 10:25 PM

Really?! What part?

Samwise 07-01-2002 11:24 PM

Actually, Burrahobbit, yes it is. Technically, a moon. It's the place where the Ewoks lived. (Empire Strikes Back). Hm. Where does George Lucas get his inspiration??

burrahobbit 07-01-2002 11:53 PM

Kuruharan, just south of SW 119th street.

Samwise, context is everything.

Samwise 07-02-2002 12:17 AM

?

Kuruharan 07-02-2002 08:32 AM

burrahobbit: Oh. That's not a part of the city I'm very familiar with. I don't get down there very often anyway.

Samwise: It's actually Return of the Jedi not Empire Strikes Back. And good ole' George has admitted on more than one occasion that he drew inspiration from LOTR.

Cathelm 07-02-2002 08:16 PM

Has anyone heard of Pippin?!

I'm in Cincinatti right now, and we've been driving on a street called Pippin at least five times a day! If I didn't like Oregon rain and mountains, I would be living there right now!

Wow, that really is weird! If I could meet that guy, I would walk straight up to him and tell him why that is so cool/weird.
