What should I read after the Silmarillion I've read LOTR the Hobbit and am half way through the Silm what next?

How about the books of Lost tales?

Or read my books [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]! Only 149 dollars each!
Just, kidding...
They suck anyway. My first one is "A halflings confestment". well, never mind...

But read the books of Lost tales. Im reading the 1th right now.

Actually, I would personally suggest reading the Unfinished Tales before the Lost Tales, but that may be a personal preferance on my part.

I just cant find my self a copy of unfinished tales so that was my only suggestion for the time being.

Read Unfinished Tales before you embark upon the History of Middle Earth also known as HoME(of which Lost Tales is a part). HoME is not for everybody and the degree in which you'll enjoy it depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for another LoTR, HoME isn't it. If you only want poetry, linguistics, "history" or philosophy only parts of HoME are needed. If you are trying to gain a greater overall understanding of Tolkien and his works, the whole 12 volumes is a must.

Mithadan is right, HoME is a tough (but enjoyable) read. Especially if you are going to read all the annotations and footnotes. I read the Unfinished Tales, then the Silmarillion, and then the Letters of Tolkien before I started on the History of Middle Earth. I'm currently in the middle of The Book of Lost Tales Part 2, which is the second book in the History of Middle Earth series.

I'm part of the Unfinished Tales first group! It is very good, and it "completes" the stories of LotR and The Silmarillion. Now to embark on Lost Tales I! [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

I say Unfinished Tales, for it finishes the tales that were unfinished...if you know what i mean [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

To be honest, I fell in love with it because of the part describing the Gates of Gondolin...

Definitely recommend the Unfinished Tales. HoME 1-12 contains much of Tolkiens work in very rudimentary form You need to be able to sift through and see past mistakes in nomenclature, geography, chronology and the like. Having said that Morgoths Ring and the Shaping of Middle Earth contain some little gems of info.
