Yes, made by the Elves you know

So was the mithril coat really made by the Elves? Or is it merely an assumption by the movie-makers?
I always thought it was made by the Dwarves for the Elves. Could well be wrong. Help?

Elrian 10-27-2002 10:17 AM

Sting was made by the Elves, the mithril shirt by Dwarves, mithril was only found in Moria, and forged there. In the book I beleive Gandalf tells Bilbo that the mithril shirt was probably made for some Elven prince or something to that effect. But Sting was made in Gondolin for the wars between the Elves and the forces of Morgoth.

Yeah, the mithril-coat was made by the Dwarves. From Return of the King:

Quote:

'Dwarf-coat, elf-cloak, blade of the downfallen West...'
::shivers:: One of the most chilling parts in the whole novel...but I digress. And I think it said something about Elven princes that had to do with mithril in Fellowship, but for the life of me I can't remember or find it.

I know there was a line said by I think Aragorn

Quote:

Here's a pretty hobbit skin to wrap an Elven princeling in
As disturbing as I think that line is, it does mention the Elves, but not as the makers of the coat. The did love mithril above all other metals, but Bilbo's coat wasn't made by them.

TolkienGurl 10-27-2002 03:23 PM

I think an orc said that. Not sure, though.

Elenna 10-27-2002 03:30 PM

No, I just checked. It was when Frodo revealed to the Fellowship why the spear that would have skewered a wild boar didn't skewer a hobbit. Aragorn said it.

Orual 10-27-2002 05:01 PM

Ah! That's what it was! But...I looked for it...what page? What edition do you have? This is going to drive me crazy!

It doesn't seem like something Aragorn would say...

Diamond18 10-27-2002 07:07 PM

He did, though. It's in Chapter VI, Lothlórien. It's in the begininng of the chapter. I'm glad that line wasn't in the movie. It continues with;

Quote:

"...If it were known that hobbits had such hides, all the hunters of Middle-earth would be riding to the Shire."
That's sick...Tolkien must have been in a "mood". (Can you imagine? Hobbit season...horrors!)

TolkienGurl 10-27-2002 07:28 PM

That's gross!

Lindolirian 10-27-2002 08:34 PM

In the Hobbit when Thorin gives the coat to Bilbo it is said that it was made by the Dwarves for a small Elven prince. In the movie when Bilbo says, "Yes, made by the Elves you know," I believe he was speaking of the sword Sting, which was made by the Elves of Gondolin.

Childlike Empress 10-28-2002 09:46 AM

Yes indeed; when he said it, naught but Sting had made its appearance. We (and Frodo) didn't even know of the coat's existence when Bilbo said that line.

I think Strider was just joking about the hobbit hunting thing, it seemed that way to me anyway.

I'm pretty sure that Aragorn was being sarcastic.

Diamond18 10-28-2002 11:00 PM

Well, yes, I'm sure it was a joke. But it made me stop and actually picture it in my mind...skinning a hobbit. (My imagination tends to take things and run wild with them, all in a manner of nanoseconds, before I can reason the thought away.)

Of course, the *real* question is, how on earth did the Mouth of Sauron know that Dwarves had made the coat instead of Elves? They both used mithril, so...ahh, never mind, maybe he could smell it or something.

I might not remember correctly, but I kind of remember the "Made by the Elves" as referring primarily to Sting, but Sting and the mithril coat were presented almost simultaneously, and the line could have been taken as referring to both items. In which case I wouldn't really say that they were being inconsistent, just that Bilbo is having a bit of a "senior moment" so to speak (he does forget things a lot towards the end)...

Diamond18 10-28-2002 11:46 PM

I think that he was referring specifically to Sting, because if I recall correctly, the whole line goes, "Yes, made by the elves, you know. The blade glows blue when orcs are near."

Eomer of the Rohirrim 10-30-2002 06:21 AM

You know, you're totally right! This thread was pointless. My apologies.

Helkahothion 10-30-2002 01:57 PM

Sting was forched by the elves and the Mithril armor by the Dwarves. Gandalf Thinks it was made for a prince of elves. And Aragorn confirmed that.
