Hobbits: frod and his parents in particular
 

ok im new at this so this might be kinda stupid but... have you ever wonderd if Frodo was afraid of water.. because thats how his parents died isnt it? What do you all think ?

Welcome to the Downs! I kind of doubt that he was, because he travelled over the Anduin, the Brandywine, lived near The Water and finally sailed over the sea to Valinor. That's a lot of travveled over water for someone who's hydrophobic.

As I remember, while in Mordor, one of the memories that Frodo drew on for comfort was of him, Sam, Rosie and her brothers playing in the Bywater pool. (I'd look up the exact quote, but am feeling lazy tonight. I know it's in there.)

So my guess is that Frodo at least knew how to dog-paddle. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] Besides, he grew up with Brandybucks, who did not "look upon boats as wild horses."

This thread has got me thinking, was Frodo ever influenced at all by his parents death?? It caused him to live with Bilbo and get the ring, but is there anything else? Did it ever influence his thinking? Was he hurt by it? I do not remember ever reading anything about that. What do you think?

It probably affected him in the way that he was an orphan, but I don't know what that would do.

I'm not too sure how old Frodo was when he was oprhaned, but I'd say if he was very young when they drowned, he would of grown up knowing of his parents death, so he might of accepted it. And Bilbo would of been a father-figure towards him, so he would have been loved.

I think Frodo was 12 when his parents died. He wasn't adopted by Bilbo till age 21. Between 12 and 21, he grew up in Brandy Hall in Buckland. There were apparently a whole parcel of relatives living there together so Frodo would have had plenty of company.

It doesn't sound like anyone in particular was keeping an eye on him, so he could kind of run wild (and get in trouble stealing mushroom from Farmer Maggot!).

I imagine that Bilbo paid frequent visits to his relatives, and Frodo must have really hit it off with him. I can even imagine Bilbo chatting with Gandalf when he came to the Shire and talking with him about his plans to adopt Frodo.

How Lobelia Sackville-Baggins must have fussed about that adoption as she probably realized it could cut her out of the inheritance of Bag End.

Sometimes we forget how important Bilbo was to Frodo, since we really don't see much of them together in LotR. But Tolkien clearly stated that Bilbo was Frodo's favorite person in the whole world (by implication, that meant even more than Sam which is hard to believe!) So even though Frodo must have missed Sam very much when he sailed West, he did have the consolation of being near Bilbo again.

The book actually says how the Sackville-Bagginses were upset when Frodo was adopted.

It must have been hard on Frodo, knowing he had to leave his best friend behind. I can relate. (and no, I did not sail across a sea on the Grey Ship!!!) But it did say that Sam left for the Grey Havens when his wife Rose died.
