Fingon, who rescued Maedhros from Thangorodrim and led the Noldor in their ill-fated and impossible effort to defeat Morgoth in the battle of Unnumbered Tears.

I'd go with Sam. Frodo often lost hope along the way though that certainly didn't dimnish his courage. Howver, it was Sam who kept them going. Frodo's capture led to several truly brave acts on Sam's part. It's a tough question though, specially since Aragorn took the paths of the dead and Turin was marvelously brave. But yes, Sam it is.

Ummmm......*grins sheepishly*....It may be a bit late to ask this question since I've already posted my reply but I'm wondering about a certain technicality.
By bravery do you mean overcoming your fear, or the total absence of fear. The answer would change with the definition. I rather think gravery is the former and courage the latter....or is it vice-versa?

Re: E Poll II: Bravest Soul

I went with Frodo on this one because he went into Mordor knowing the danger, while Sam, for all his heroism later, never really considered his own mortality until the end. It's a tie with Hurin, though, because he was exceptionally brave! Why no elves, enep?

Re: E Poll II: Bravest Soul

I thought Aragorn was very brave, because he accepted his fate to go to Gondor with Boromir and fight what was assuredly going to be a loosing battle. But then of course, he didn't get to go because of Boromir's death. Instead he, Legolas, and Gimli followed the orcs to try and rescue Merry and Pippin, which I still find very brave. They would have been slaughtered had they caught up with the orcs first.

I voted for Aragorn - it's a tie with hurin though.

umm

Hmm...based on the fact that this is a newbie forum, there is a distint possibility that not everyone posting here will have read the Silmarillion or have any idea who Fingon is.

That, and there are only five spots Sorry

I would'nt think that it would be fair

to vote for two people at the same time(Oh you numbskull you cant duhhhhhhhhhhh)but I'd have to say it was a Tie between Sam and Frodo,I mean who would stand up to a gigantic spider?Or eavesdrop on a wizard who was pron to lets say put wolves on fire?I mean Sam was very very brave(and in someplaces stupid but still brave)but so was Frodo I know I would NOT go down a dark tunnel where an unknown something was hiding and planning to eat me and the fact that he went all that way with this burden that was dragging him down and never once did he change his mind.I think that that is a great bravery in itself.
Sam
Ps.Oh what DO you mean by brave soul Enep and TLW?

frodo/sam

i agree with enep. i haven't read the silmarillion so i have no idea who fingon is.
but from the choices given i'd have to go with frodo.
Like lorien wanderer said that he did lose hope at times but i can't really blame him for that 'cause sam didn't bear the ring which was a huge burdenand in the end frodo did manage to destroy the ring

Actually, I've read the sil several times, but I know not everyone has, and that was taken into consideration

Bravest soul as in most courageous, bravest person, most valiant etc.

WHAT ABOUT BOROMIR???? he was brave. he tried to take the ring cause he thoght it would help his father and his people!!!! thats brave, sortof. at least it would have been, had he lived

Anastasia 10-11-2002 06:49 AM

I agree about Boromir.
Also, he defended the Hobbits afterwards. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/tiere/grommit.gif

Amarie 10-11-2002 12:35 PM

First to come to mind was Fingon, but I think there are others that equal his courage. Bilbo Baggins showed great courage when he entered Smaug's cave. Not bad for a small gentle hobbit who'd lead an easy life. Maybe someone would argue that he did this out of ignorance? I do not think that he did though, he was clearly fighting back fear, probaby the worst fear of his life.

Well if you read the top it said:

Sorry, but if they listed everyonethat could posibly be considered brave, we would have a list longer then this page could hold. They had to only pick a few.

thinavarial 10-11-2002 03:16 PM

even though this not on ur selections but i think eowyn was brave she was a very fair maiden who went to war and killed the king of nazgul......and also i think sam is very brave he didnot have to go to mordor w/frodo but he wanted t o how many ppl do that w/a special task (he had no ring to destroy but only helped)and b/c of him the ring was destyored or else sauron would be ruling. and also i think it was merry that killed the nazgul too nnot many ppl can do that but i vote for aragorn and sam.

VanimaEdhel 10-11-2002 05:38 PM

I, personally, think that Huan was very brave. He was the hound from the tale of Beren and Luthien. He is actually probably my favorite character from the Silmarillion. I mean: technically, he didn't really need to help them, but he did. And: he used his 3 times to speak on them...

ilon 10-12-2002 03:33 AM

Sam Gamgee is the bravest.
He was there for Frodo all the time and also had the strength to assist and help him for all hardships they came across and though one time he left him and took the ring for his own for he thought he was dead.
Even though said that he wanted to join them in the journey to 'see' some elves, i thinkl part of his intention was to be by the side of his master.
