Which continent resembles ME the most

Which do you guys think. In my opinion it's western area looks* like North America. I will give a few comparisans Sierra Nevadas= Ered Luin Rocky mountains= Misty mountains. South America could be Umbar.

*I know it's suposed to be some sort of proto Europe.

Neferchoirwen 03-05-2002 08:20 PM

I thought it looked like Spain and Portugal. Unless I'm all screwed in my memory. The shape of the entire Middle Earth looks like the Spain and portugal part of Europe.

Galdor 03-05-2002 11:30 PM

They do seem very similar. It seems more like Portugal to me however.

Tigerlily Gamgee 03-05-2002 11:59 PM

Gee... it looks kinda like New Zealand to me
OK, I know that was cheesey

Neferchoirwen 03-06-2002 03:17 AM

How about New Zealand sights IN Portugal?

Sorry I had to think out loud.

Ahanarion 03-06-2002 12:05 PM

I just remembered something on one of those Discovery Channel shows they said Europe and North America were once one continent.

Ahanarion 03-06-2002 12:11 PM

Oops I forgot to say it look alot like ME.

the_master_of_puppets 03-06-2002 01:07 PM

personally i think New Zealand is Middle Earth- exactly as i imagine it

Alkanoonion 03-06-2002 08:51 PM

Minus the sheep New Zealand is ME exactly as I imagined it.

Ahanarion 03-06-2002 10:05 PM

I meant on a map.

Beren87 03-07-2002 01:26 PM

I think that it looks more like Antartica that anything else.

Enedhil 03-08-2002 04:39 PM

ME looks most like new zealand or scotland to me. Slight bit of bais there, i think you'll find

Daegwenn 03-08-2002 06:00 PM

Caradhras reminds me of the Canadian rockies. I have driven up there in the winter time...it's scary.

Narya 03-09-2002 08:50 AM

I reminds me of Canada.. although i´ve never been there .. but didn´t Tolkien say that it´s like Europe (and that it is in the same climatic- zone)?
The landscape also remainds me of how I imagine England in older days.

kementari 03-09-2002 09:25 AM

Personally I think ME looks kinda like a proto Europe. A lot of the descriptions given in the book matches geographical sites in Europe.

Starbreeze 03-09-2002 01:55 PM

Uk! Ok, that was just me being patriotic there!

Daegwenn 03-09-2002 03:07 PM

Well, the geography of ME is based on Europe...Rivendel's latitude is that of Oxford.

Although, the shire reminds me a lot of New Brunswick and Caradhras reminds me of the Rockies, that is because I have travelled across Canada many times...my opinion would probably change if I did go into the states though.

Starbreeze, there is nothing wrong with being Patriotic! I am very proud to be Canadian!

Oh yeah, the climate in Canada and Britian are the same in some places. In Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Islands. Cold. Damp. Rainy. and in the summer time, Brief-Don't blink you'll miss it. And 10C is perfect summer weather for shorts and t-shirts.

the guy who be short 01-30-2003 04:39 PM

it was actually meant to be europe
in my opinion the sea of nurn and the sea of rhun resemble the caspian sea and the black sea. the rest couls be a sort of dis shaped europe couldnt it?
hope u find that helpful

Meela 01-31-2003 05:21 AM

i compared the USA with ME once. The Shire was in the centre, Gondor was in the east and south east, Rohan either in the south or the south west and Arnor in the other one, and the rest somewhere else but i cant remember

Wasn't the whole world once one continent?

Meela 01-31-2003 01:06 PM

u mean Pangea, right? everything was one huge land

Inderjit Sanghera 01-31-2003 01:13 PM

The lands have changed it too much too make it compareble. Latitude wise Rivendell=Oxford and Minas Tirth=Florence.

Gorwingel 01-31-2003 02:44 PM

I never thought of Canada, it does kind of look like that. Canada is very grand, and some of the Canadian Rockies look just like the misty mountains and the other places I actually remember seeing some places looking just like Rohan.

Vardadurwen 01-31-2003 03:09 PM

Oh totally Canada!!

But actually, I was reminded of Canada very much so in FOTR, especially the shot where Strider is leading the hobbits into the wild. It looked a lot like northern Ontario, with its thick pine trees and dense forestation. There was even some snow on the ground too!

The Rocky mountain chain could work very well as the Misty mountains, especially on the western side getting more into BC, as opposed to Alberta. Also, the plains of Rohan could also be a part of Alberta; not quite as west as the mountains, but getting into hillier areas.

The river Anduin could have been the St.Lawrence river, or another river further north. There is actually a river and waterfall in New York State that probably would have suited the story very well, although the name escapes me at the moment...and it's not in Canada haha.

Canada and Europe have very similar biomes; so even though Tolkien may have been thinking of his own country when he wrote the books, I find that they are easily applicable to Canada aswell.

Of course, New Zealand was a beautiful setting for Lord of the Rings. I think it works perfectly. PJ should definitely get some commendation for his choice of areas used to depict the places in ME.

If I were looking on a globe, I'd have to say that the shape of Middle Earth looks alot like Antarctica.

Jesse 01-31-2003 04:23 PM

I think Middle Earth looks the most like Scotland. But, that's just me. :sigh:

Tenduriel 02-01-2003 02:00 PM

I have to admit I haven't seen the world outside of Europe yet (that is: since the time i left Eresseä )but I always thought that ME resembles Eastern Europe a lot. this part of Europe has a more continental climate - hot summers, chilly winters - and some parts are still more or less wild, like the woods around Prague and the lesser known valleys of the Alps. but you have to know where to find them!!

just for the record: the place where I have settled down is WESTERN Europe, so I'm not...
well you know what I mean.

Namárië!
