I don't know if you mean Balin or Durin VII. Or both. So I say both.

What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways?</p>

Re: New Quiz thread - 3 Jun 2000

I was looking for Balin and the Dwarves that accompanied him. I don't think that there was ever any mention of a colonization of Moria other than Balin's.

Durin VII was in the fourth age. He is listed on the bottom of the tree at the very end of appendix A. Other than that I don't know where to find him, I could find out later, if you want.

Durin VII is not listed as having lived in Moria.

Let's go to a new question. You got Balin right, burrahobbit, so you ask next.

Re: New Quiz thread - 3 Jun 2000

Man, this one was tricky, it took me some time even to look it up.
Gandalf said it on Caradhras, and these were words of power which kindled a fire. I cannot translate it properly, but &quot;naur&quot; means fire, &quot;an&quot; normally means long, and &quot;ammen&quot; would mean upwards, or into the sky. This way it would be sth. like &quot;Let there be a flame up into the Sky!&quot; or such.
Making a magical fire meant &quot;writing GANDALF IS HERE visible from here to&quot; , erm, very far.

They were probably entombed in the burial mound of the last prince of Cardolan. I'm not sure of his name.

The kin-strife

The kin-strife was an awful time of civil unrest and war in Gondor. What was the root cause of it?

Re: The kin-strife

Strife in the fourth and fifth decades of the fifteenth century of the third age had as it origins conflict over the maintenance of pure descent from Tar-Minyatur (thence from the Edain). The bloodline was mingled by Valacar while a diplomatic pawn in Rhovanion. Disconteneted elements in the coastal population revolted and (I believe) formed themeselves as the corsairs of Umbar.

Re: The kin-strife

What a great answer. Of course, it was the blood mingling I was most looking for. That a son of Gondor's royal family could marry a 'lowly' princess of the Northmen made people doubt that the heir was worthy of the throne.
