Right, Elrian. Your turn now.

Elrian 02-11-2002 12:14 AM

What part of the Old Forest does Merry say is the queerest part of the whole wood?

Bruce MacCulloch 02-11-2002 12:24 AM

The Withywindle River valley

Elrian 02-11-2002 01:21 AM

Right again, your turn.

Bruce MacCulloch 02-11-2002 02:37 AM

Where was Flòi buried?

Elrian 02-11-2002 08:29 AM

Near the Mirrormere.

Bruce MacCulloch 02-11-2002 03:59 PM

Yes, Elrian.

Elrian 02-11-2002 06:54 PM

In what direction did the gates of Caras Galadan face?

Bruce MacCulloch 02-11-2002 07:46 PM

South-west

Elrian 02-11-2002 11:12 PM

Right again, your turn.

Raefindel 02-12-2002 12:01 AM

How about this... Who is the father of twins?

Bruce MacCulloch 02-12-2002 12:03 AM

Where did the wood for Earendil's ship come from?

Scapegoat 02-12-2002 02:22 AM

Nimbrethil, according to Bilbo's song.

Bruce MacCulloch 02-12-2002 02:26 AM

And since Bilbo's song is the only place you will find the tale of Earendil in Fellowship of the Ring, you are most correct!
Your turn, Scapegoat.

Joy 02-13-2002 01:35 AM

The answer to this is Elrond - His sons are Elrohir and Elladan, their sister was Arwen

Sorry, just noticed one unanswered, so I went for it.

Bruce MacCulloch 02-14-2002 12:01 AM

Scapegoat?
It's your turn...

Scapegoat 02-14-2002 12:29 AM

Describe one occasion in FotR that Gandalf definitely did not have his staff in his hand.

Bruce MacCulloch 02-14-2002 12:44 AM

When he drove a firework-laden cart through Bywater and Hobbiton up to Bag End before the Party, he would have needed both hands to drive the cart.

Raefindel 02-14-2002 07:17 PM

So sorry! didn't mean to go out of turn. It won't happen again.

Scapegoat 02-14-2002 11:11 PM

Sorry Bruce. My grandfather drove a horsecart, and he lost his arm in a sawmill when he was nine. Although I agree it is highly probable that Gandalf had laid aside his staff while in that situation, I'm looking for a time when it states positively that he had put it down.

Joy 02-14-2002 11:34 PM

I don't know if this counts or not, but when Gandald was fighting the Balrog, it states that he smote the bridge and it cracked at the balrogs feet and the staff was broken and fell from his hand. - FotR "The Bridge of Kazad-dum"

Watcher in the Water 02-14-2002 11:44 PM

Did gandalf not set his staff down when he meets Aragorn Legolas and Gimli on 'Fangorns Hill'?

Scapegoat 02-15-2002 12:05 AM

Joy is correct. It does state at the bridge his staff fell from his hand. As far as the meeting with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, that occurs in the Two Towers, not in FotR.

Your turn Joy.

PS: there is at least one other occasion that Gandalf puts down his staff in FotR, if anyone cares to look.

Could you tell me if it is before Rivendell or after? I would like to find both instances before I ask a question.

Just gives me more time to find one.

Boromir to Frodo in Lorien. Boromir had doubts about Galadriel...

Joy 02-16-2002 04:32 PM

Very good, Androndo.

Your turn.

Androndo the Thoughtfull 02-17-2002 09:01 AM

Ok,
What kind of trees were beyond Stock-brook?

Bruce MacCulloch 02-17-2002 09:23 AM

Oak

dernhelm 02-21-2002 01:46 PM

Mostly oaks with a few elm and ash trees.

Androndo the Thoughtfull 02-21-2002 02:11 PM

Oak is correct Bruce (nice pic btw...)

I have been off the net the last few days - sorry the long time :-/

Bruce MacCulloch 02-21-2002 02:29 PM

Extremely easy question here - but I can't think of anything off the top of my head at the moment.
What was being gnawed on by a troll?
(I'm looking for a very specific answer)

Mat_Heathertoes 02-21-2002 04:42 PM

Vilya Elathelas of Rivendell 02-21-2002 05:49 PM

"For it looks liek the shin o' my nuncle Tim,
And it should be a-lyin' in a graveyard!"

Bruce MacCulloch 02-21-2002 10:56 PM

Correct. Your turn, Vilya.
