Who said....

There's another similar thread with descriptions of locations (called, appropriately enough, Locations) and I thought this might interest people. Guess who said this, and to whom:

"The treacherous are ever distrustful. But you need not fear for your skin. I do not wish to kill you, or hurt you, as you would know, if you really understood me."

Not too tough. Figure it out and answer with another quote!

Joy 03-11-2002 02:34 PM

Frodo to Gollum??

EonweHeraldofManwe 03-11-2002 03:00 PM

good guess, but no.

Samwise 03-11-2002 07:58 PM

Gandalf to Saruman?
Quote:

"There was a lot more," said Sam, "all about Mordor. I didn't learn that part, it gave me the shivers. "

EonweHeraldofManwe 03-11-2002 08:17 PM

Yep, you got it. In the Voice of Saruman. Now you.

Samwise 03-12-2002 06:12 PM

You're KIDDING!?!? I got it right? Okay, here goes.

"There are evil things written on this hilt, though maybe your eyes cannot see them. "

Who said it to who, and (bonus) about what?

Watcher in the Water 03-12-2002 07:48 PM

I think it was Glorfindel to Aragorn... about the hilt of the knife that injured Frodo on Weathertop.

Samwise 03-12-2002 07:54 PM

Yes, Watcher, right on both counts. Yours is the next question.
Quote:

"That's all I know." stammered Sam, blushing. "I learned it from Mr. Bilbo when I was a lad. "

Watcher in the Water 03-13-2002 07:40 PM

Dreadfully easy chestnut...

Who said: "Well, I'm home."

Samwise 03-13-2002 08:00 PM

Actually, I believe he said, "Well, I'm back." and it was me--I mean, Sam to Rose Cotton.

Watcher in the Water 03-13-2002 08:22 PM

Ahh crap... I gotta stop stuffing these things up... and you are right... you did say that...

Ask on Master Gamgee

Samwise 03-13-2002 10:29 PM

Thank you, kind sir: now, lets see...okay...
Quote:

"A decent respectable hobbit was Mister Drogo Baggins; there was never much to tell of him, till he was drownded."
Who said it to whom?

Bruce MacCulloch 03-13-2002 10:56 PM

The Gaffer to the other patrons of the Ivy Bush on the Bywater Road.

Samwise 03-15-2002 04:13 PM

Yes, Bruce, that's it. I apologize for the delay in answering.
Quote:

"I don't know about that," said Sam. "But how would this suit? It ain't what I call proper poetry, if you understand me: just a bit of nonsense. But these old images here brought it to my mind."
Standing up, with his hands behind his back, as if he was at school, he began to sing to an old tune.

Bruce MacCulloch 03-15-2002 06:02 PM

Quote:

You are both vague and disquieting ... Speak more plainly!

Nefwathiel Teleri 03-15-2002 08:19 PM

Gamgee, you need to let up on the pipe and ale.

Samwise 03-15-2002 08:23 PM

?

Merry 05-10-2002 05:26 PM

I am taking a purely wild guess here in the vague hope that I get it right but, Sam's gaffer?

Samwise 05-10-2002 06:30 PM

Um...Frodo to Gandalf?
Quote:

Sam looked from bank to bank uneasily. The trees had seemed hostile before, as if they harboured secret eyes and lurking dangers; now he wished that the trees were still there. He felt that the company was on a river that was the frontier of war.

Joy 05-11-2002 01:54 AM

Bruce:

I believe that it was Pippin to Gandalf - concerning Gandalf and Aragorn.

I honestly can't remember.. I just know that I read this the other night.

Arwen Imladris 05-20-2002 11:54 AM

Samwise??

Arwen Imladris 05-28-2002 11:44 AM

O.K. No one has asked in a long time so, an easy one:

Who said:

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Daniel Telcontar 05-28-2002 11:52 AM

Bilbo at the birthday party.

Next quote: If by my life or death I can protect you, I will.

AnnúnwenOfRivendell 05-28-2002 12:25 PM

Aragorn to Frodo at the Council of Elrond.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next quote: "Life in the wide world goes on, much as it has this past age."
Arwen Imladris 05-28-2002 01:11 PM
Daniel Telcontar you were correct.
Next quote: Gandalf to Frodo in the shire.
Next quote: Bilbo Baggins! Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks, I am not trying to rob you. I'm trying to help you.
Samwise 05-28-2002 09:47 PM
Quote:
Bilbo Baggins! Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks, I am not trying to rob you. I'm trying to help you.
Gandalf to Bilbo.
Arwen Imladris 05-29-2002 02:31 PM
correct! Your turn.
Samwise 05-29-2002 02:54 PM
"My heart will be glad, even in the winter; but it lies many miles away. Let us hasten! "
Quote:
Out of the shadows a ladder was let down. Legolas ran lightly up, and Frodo followed slowly; behind came Sam, trying not to breathe loudly.
AnnúnwenOfRivendell 05-30-2002 08:41 AM
How come no one tried to guess my quote????
Arwen Imladris 05-30-2002 02:22 PM
AnnúnwenOfRivendell: I thought I did! Wasn't it Gandalf to Frodo?
Samewise: I thought it was supposed to be something some one said. That quote is from when they were in Lothlorien, Legolas and Frodo and Sam were climbing a tree to talk to the elves and to stay the night on the flet, but if I am not mistaken, no one actually said that.
AnnúnwenOfRivendell 06-03-2002 09:21 AM
Oh, I'm sorry Arwen Imladris. I looked back and you had guessed. Oh and you got it right the first time. Sorry about that.
Lindolirian 06-03-2002 10:03 PM
Samwise: Its Aragorn to Legolas as they appraoch Lorien.
Samwise 06-04-2002 06:51 PM
That's it, Lindolirian .
Quote:
Sam had a natural mistrust of the inhabitants of other parts of the Shire; and also he was not disposed to be quick friends with anyone who had beaten his master, however long ago.
Lindolirian 06-05-2002 03:59 PM
Here's the next one then:
Quote:
Three of them! There's something mighty queer about this.
Lómelindi 06-05-2002 05:10 PM
Quote:
Three of them! There's something might queer about this.
If I recall correctly, that would be the fox that sees Frodo, Sam, and Pippin resting on the road to Buckland in the first book.
Lindolirian 06-06-2002 03:47 PM
correct! and yay for the fox.
Lómelindi 06-06-2002 04:37 PM
Yay for the fox, indeed.
Next quote, and I hope I quote it correctly:
Quote:
You do not know your danger.
Samwise 06-06-2002 08:39 PM
Um...Strider to the four Hobbits at the Inn at Bree?
Quote:
Watching LOTR
I liked that movie!
Lómelindi 06-06-2002 09:14 PM
Not quite…it has to do with hobbits, but it's actually said during a surprisingly light incident.
Lindolirian 06-07-2002 12:01 PM
This was in TTT Quotes and it took me forever. ( infact i didn't know it until the correct answer was posted )
But i know it now:
Gandalf to Theoden at Isengard as the latter discusses with Merry the small doings of his forefathers and distant cousins of a remote degree...
