Vittles

Can you remember the two times the word "vittles" is used?

Beren87 03-03-2003 06:18 PM

Is this going to be a quote game about food? If so, great idea!!

Well, I remember the Gaffer saying it one time.

Estanesse 03-04-2003 07:39 AM

It was the Gaffer telling about how Drogo and his wife died.
Second time is Rory Brandybuck talking with his daughter-in-law Esmeralda about Bilbo and his mysterious disappearing
I also found a third one. Sam used the word vittles when he was talking with Frodo about his Gaffer
Quote:

As my Gaffer used to say; and need of vittles, as he mostways used to add

Really? I didn't notice that one. I was talking about the one with something like "'That mad Baggins. Off again, I suppose. But no need to worry, he hasn't taken the vittles with him!' and he called loudly to Frodo for some more wine." I'm not sure of the exact quote, the book isn't in front of me. And the one with the "and need of vittles" by the Gaffer. You people mentioned both, and a notrher besides, so ask away! And yes, I did mean to start a quote game about food.... (I was hungry. Very hungry. )

Wasn't it those twice-baked cakes with honey inside that made you thirsty or hungry or something? I'd guess thirsty though, because food that makes you hungry would be rather strange, now wouldn't it? (I was just rereading The Hobbit this morning.)

Estanesse 03-09-2003 01:19 PM

You guessed correct, your turn!!

Yes food that makes you hungry would be indeed a bit strange

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-09-2003 09:12 PM

An Elf said about Bilbo:
Quote:

Mind Bilbo doesn't eat all the ______s! He is too fat to get through keyholes yet!
What food was the Elf referring to? If it's hard I'll give a hint, if not...well, I won't.

TheBladeThatWasBroken 03-09-2003 09:20 PM

cakes

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-09-2003 09:26 PM

Wow, that was fast. Your turn!

Beren87 03-24-2003 03:47 PM

Ah, well it's been more than 10 days.

Quote:

a perfectly beautiful ______ for you, if only you won't have me for _______
What two meals are they talking about here? And who is saying this?

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-26-2003 06:23 PM

I could do with a hint....

Beren87 03-26-2003 06:26 PM

It's from the Hobbit!

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-26-2003 06:55 PM

Oh darn...I'm not good at Hobbit quotes...but I'll try....

Herudaeglin 03-26-2003 07:58 PM

That would be Bilbo telling the three trolls (Tom, Bert, and Bill) that he would cook a breakfast for them if only they would not eat him for breakfast.

Dondagnirion
"There is no spoon."

GaladrieloftheOlden 03-28-2003 05:55 PM

I think it's right...but I, as I said before, am not any good with quotes from The Hobbit...

Beren87 03-28-2003 10:04 PM

Well Dondagnirion get is! He gave the speaker and listeners. Your go!

Dondagnirion 04-07-2003 10:35 AM

Cant think of anything else to do with food right now so here is one that is EXTREMELY easy
"...and need of vittles."

Go ahead, I am shure it will be easy for you all.

Dondagnirion

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-07-2003 08:21 PM

Sam, talking about the gaffer, and one of the gaffer's favorite quotes. This was especially easy as, I think, it was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Dondagnirion 04-08-2003 12:29 PM

Exactly, thats why I could not think of anything else that had to do with food, I knew it would be way to easy. Its your turn in either case.

Dondagnirion

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-08-2003 01:04 PM

Okay, here is mine:
Quote:

buttered scones
not very detailed, I know, but it's the only time they were mentioned.

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-08-2003 06:50 PM

Need a hint? If you do, just ask

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-10-2003 04:45 PM

Is one of you quote wizes going to answer this one? Please?

Narduewen 04-10-2003 05:04 PM

It is said in the hobbit at the beginning, but it isn't a quote so I don't know if that counts, but all of the dwarves at bilbo's place are passing around buttered scones.

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-10-2003 05:15 PM

Yes, you're right, but I think that by the Quotable Quotes Forum rules you need an actual quote. Is that right? Or am I screwing up on something here?

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-12-2003 08:06 PM

Anybody? If there isn't somebody by tomorrow I think I'll just give it to Narduewen, because she is right but didn't have the quote

Beren87 04-13-2003 07:09 PM

Actually, she's correct. It wasn't a quote, just narraration.

Quote:

and the dwarves were starting on a round of buttered scones

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-14-2003 06:20 PM

Umm, oops, I guess there were two mentionings of them. Mine was actually a quote.

Beren87 04-14-2003 06:29 PM

Unless it's in HOME, UT, or tAH, I have no idea.

GaladrieloftheOlden 05-22-2003 02:29 PM

Nope, it's The Hobbit...

~Menelien

Beren87 05-22-2003 07:49 PM

Hmm...I'd say, just post the quote because I can't seem to find it, plus, it's been quite a while.

GaladrieloftheOlden 06-01-2003 11:41 AM

Ack, I'm really sorry, I screwed up and now I can’t find it myself

~Menelien

Beren87 06-01-2003 11:44 AM

Ok, I'll go then

Quote:

I haven't had a bite since breakfast

Samwise Gamgee 06-03-2003 04:59 PM

was that pippin when they are leaving bag end going toward crickhollow (not just then, but during that journey)

Beren87 06-03-2003 07:42 PM

Nope, it wasn't.

GaladrieloftheOlden 06-03-2003 08:09 PM

Bilbo when he just met up with the dwarves at the Inn place?

~Menelien

Beren87 06-03-2003 08:09 PM

Nope.

GaladrieloftheOlden 06-03-2003 08:15 PM

I feel ignorant
Merry in Bree?

~Menelien

Beren87 06-03-2003 08:17 PM

Nope.

Hint: It's in the Hobbit.
