Crossword Puzzles

We have a new feature on the site: Crossword Puzzles. Give them a try and tell us what you think!

Maikadilwen 09-05-2003 12:59 AM

Looks good, Mr. Wight!
Finally something for someone like me who loves crosswords. What a wonderful idea.

The system is easy and the puzzles aren't too difficult, though not too easy either.
And, being a Dane, my personal favourite must be "From the Iron Hills, not from Denmark".
I'm looking forward to more of these.

Both links "Out of the frying pan into the fire" and "Force of Hobbit" seemed to lead to the same puzzle. But it was a brilliant puzzle!

The Barrow-Wight 09-05-2003 07:13 AM

I wonder how that happened. Well, the URL that it goes to is 0002.html. Try 0001.html to play the other puzzle.

I'll fix the link tonight.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 09-05-2003 04:13 PM

Lots of fun, Mr. B-W!

Luthien_ Tinuviel 09-05-2003 04:42 PM

Yes, very good crossword puzzles!

burrahobbit 09-05-2003 10:53 PM

21 down. Best ever.

The Saucepan Man 09-06-2003 09:09 AM

What a fantastic idea, B-W. All credit to you and Sharkû for coming up with these. One of the strengths of this site is the new features that regularly appear (not that I visit many others).

Are you open to contributions? I used to be quite keen on devising crosswords and had been toying with the idea of putting together a Tolkien-related one myself (cryptic of course ).

The Barrow-Wight 09-06-2003 09:47 AM

Saucepan Man, we would love to have a good cryptic crossword for the site, but it's important to remember that though English is the language of the Downs, cryptic clues need to refer to things that a majority of English speakers might understand. During the BD meeting in Germany, I mentioned to Squatter that some of his criptic clues refered to things so English (the land, not the language) that it was impossible for me to decipher them. Of course, it was impossible for me to decipher any of them, since I seem incapable of understanding even the most basic of cryptic clues , so I really can't blame Squatter

I look forward to your cryptic effort, Saucepan Man.

Agh! Spare us, Saucepan! That will be the crossword that is never solved!

I found that quite amusing myself.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 09-06-2003 09:02 PM

21 down of what puzzle, may I inquire?

burrahobbit 09-06-2003 11:19 PM

All of them.

The Barrow-Wight 09-13-2003 01:37 PM

We've added another crossword puzzle to the site, for a total of five puzzles now. None of the answers on the new one are 'burrahobbit'.

burrahobbit 09-14-2003 12:02 AM

I am withdrawing from all site activity.

Elanor 09-15-2003 12:10 PM

They are fab, thanks BW. Is there any way to get the answers? I'm stumped on a few, and I can see which ones I've got right, but not the answers to the ones I don't know.

Orofaniel 09-15-2003 01:23 PM

They are brilliant! I've finished 'The Lord of The Rings', and I've done a few words on the Hobbit thing.

Thanks Bw....

Hmmm, I don't know. But you can check if your answers are correct, if it's that you mean.
(just click at 'check the puzzle' and those letters/words in red are wrong. Those in black are correct.)
