The Gaffer's Mixed-up Proverbs

Estelyn came up with a great idea, which is now a new feature on the site: The Gaffer's Mixed-up Proverbs. We hope you enjoy it!

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-17-2003 02:13 AM

Wow, so cool! Can't wait for the next one.

Later days!

I like it a lot!
I got 16 out of 20 the first time, not that bad me thinks...

Elrond the Younger 11-17-2003 02:50 AM

Gaffer's proverbs rock...Are there going to be more? If so when?
(NB this is my first ever posting so I don't know if I worked it right)

Estelyn Telcontar 11-17-2003 07:21 AM

Welcome to the Downs, Elrond the Younger! Your first post is just fine, and of course I'm happy to hear that you and others are enjoying the mixed-up proverbs. Actually, I like the 'wrong' combinations - some of them are quite funny! I am planning more, but you may have to wait a bit; with so much happening movie-wise within the next days and weeks, I'll be busy on the Movies forum. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the other games on the main site and/or reading around and posting here on the forum.

Oh, great Estelyn! I like the wrong combinations better than the right ones a lot of the time... For example "It’s the job that’s never started as ends Better." and "At table small men make long delays." Great work!

Finwe 11-17-2003 09:37 PM

I don't think that 18 out of 20 the first time is bad at all! This is an excellent idea!

Diamond18 11-17-2003 10:24 PM

I particularly liked "Where there's a whip there's hope".

That was fun, Esty. If anyone's curious, I got all correct. First try.

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-17-2003 11:46 PM

Me, too. Although..."He that flies pays for all" is quite funny...for me, anyway...oh, well...

Later days!

As English is not my mother language 19 out of 20 is not bad for the first time. But I guess there are many other possibilities as Diamond and Nilpaurion have shown

I liked "The burned hand does not glitter" or "Oft evil will may do the greater deeds" or "The wolf that one hears teaches best".

Great idea Estelyn.

Took my time and got 20/20. However I have been known to mix up my rhymes and proverbs so I'm not suprised.

Can't wait for the next batch.

Ainaserkewen 11-20-2003 05:26 PM

Yai, I got it all! Though some I had to guess, I made good guesses. It's a fun game, thanks Estelyn, and thanks BW.

Wonderful Esty. And I got them all correct, too. Which just goes to show you that I always listened to my ol' Gaffer.

Oddwen 11-23-2003 12:28 AM

Very fun! But, one may ask, what is the dear ol' Gaffer doing quoting orcs, hmm?

Morgul Queen 11-23-2003 02:51 AM

I, too, have also wondered why he was quoting the Orcs...maybe he learned it from his dear ol' Sam while lecturing him about his Ironmongery. I can just hear Sam say, while his dear ol' dad stands over him 'They was righ', you know. Where there's a whip theres a will, 'cept in this case its a tongue instead.'

Good job, though. Hows about using 'The guest who has escaped from the roof will think twice before coming back in by the door.' next time?

Estelyn Telcontar 11-23-2003 07:05 AM

Thanks for the compliments, everyone, and thanks for the good proverb to use, MQ. That is one I like, and although the next game is already planned, I will certainly use it sometime in the future. You might want to delete it from your post here to make it less easy for others...

Calencoire 11-23-2003 11:03 AM

Ah! Very clever, very clever! I did enjoy it, and Tolkien's quotes are wonderful, as are the mixed-up ones. I shall also be waiting for the next one.

Estelyn Telcontar 11-26-2003 07:52 AM

The Barrow-Wight has put up the next installation of Mixed-Up Proverbs today - hope everyone enjoys the second game!

(PS - This is my 2222nd post!)

Those were a kick. Thanks Estelyn and Barrow Wight.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 12-03-2003 08:13 PM

Thanks, Estelyn! I love them! I got 20 out of 20 the first time, and 19 the second time. Not bad at all. "A wild beast cornered is help unlooked for."

the phantom 12-03-2003 10:22 PM

I got 'em all right, but what I really enjoyed was making silly, incorrect ones.

This was a great idea.
