Names, names....

Well, I think I need the help of my fellow Barrow Downers. My aunt is 4 1/2 months pregnant with a baby boy, and she can't think of a name. I came up with an idea to name him something from Tolkien (of course ), but the thing is she's seen FOTR. And the name can't be really weird or screaming "Tolkien", becasue they already have a weird last name (Tollenare) (sp?), pronounced Tall-in-NARE. She wants to name him Calvin, Caleb, or Felix , but I'm convinced that there's a good LOTR name for him somewhere. No problem if you can't think of one, but I don't want a little cousin named Calvin... (no offense to any Calvins out there)

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-29-2003 04:39 PM

Maybe Aldor. Or Milo (Brockhouse). Or Rowlie (Appledore). Or Rory (Brandybuck). (Yep, I like hobbits.) Or Daeron. Or Elladan. Dan for short.

peonydeepdelver 06-29-2003 04:54 PM

yeah, I'm a hobbit lover too. I like Rowlie, but I doubt she will...

Luthien_ Tinuviel 06-29-2003 05:57 PM

How about Peregrin? (It's a real name!). Sam? Beren? Boromir is a name in Slavic languages, so you could name him that. Or perhaps Tolman (Tom for short).

peonydeepdelver 06-29-2003 06:00 PM

Hmmm, I like Tolman... I also like Peregrin but that would end up being too obvious because if she says "What would his nickname be?", then it'd either be Perry or Pippin. Oh well.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 06-29-2003 06:14 PM

On second thought, then his name would be Tolman Tollenare. Rather... interesting... Okay, it's not that bad.

Tom? but does anybody want to be named after some (more or less) weird guy in yellow boots? Tom is nice name but when knowing it's from LotR...
or what about Beren or Bill or Brego or...

Everdawn 06-30-2003 03:35 AM

How about something Elvish? but elvish that sounds like a normal name, you know with a double meaning...

Lucinda 06-30-2003 09:00 AM

Rohan is an actual name. There are three people at my school called that. And my bus driver is called Balin.
I heard of someone called Erendil, like Elendil, and it was shrtened to Eren, pronounced like Aaron.

Finwe 06-30-2003 11:10 AM

How about Daeron? It isn't too far from the name Daren, which is a fairly common name.

Feanor of the Peredhil 06-30-2003 11:31 AM

I rather like Celeborn; it's similar to Caleb. Or Curufinwe- you could call him Finny...

...could name him Caleb Brian in memory of Celebrian...

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-30-2003 12:19 PM

Caleb Brian! Cool idea! And I also like Daeron. And Derufin, Derry for short. Or Halfast, Hal for short. Or what about Dwimmerlaik?...

elfearz1 06-30-2003 01:13 PM

What about Dale? I also like Eomer. I can't really think of better ones right now. I had a list, but I can't find it at the moment. oh well

Meela 06-30-2003 01:24 PM

Estel

peonydeepdelver 06-30-2003 03:47 PM

I like Daeron, since it's a lot like Darren, and not a crazy spelling like Dwimmerlaik and Curufinwe/Finny. I think she'd like Dale a lot, but the problem is that (if you live in Massachusetts), she used to DJ at night for Kiss 108 FM, and is good friends with another DJ named Dale. Plus she has a pug (which is like the cutest cuddlebunny EVER ) whom she named Rocky after another of her DJ friends...
Anyway, I'll be sure to give her a list of all these names and after the next time I see her, I'll be sure to give you all her feedback.

The good part is that her husband is a big LOTR fan, and he wants to name him Aragorn or Frodo. He's awesome in my book!

If I name my child a Middle-earth name, it would be a bit abnormal.

But I do like:

Estel - Middle-earthen, but with a hint of humanity

Primula

Samwise (just 'Sam' for short)

I have a cousin named Turin. Although she's female, and named after the city in Italy, not the sad person in Tolkien . Still, pretty cool.

Daeron could easily be shortened to "Ron" (heh, name him after BW? ).

I know someone who's name is Aragorn. The thing is that she's a girl...but changed her name... I want to change my name...but I have to wait until I get out of the house!

I like the name Beren...

peonydeepdelver 07-02-2003 03:46 PM

Well I gave her the list, I'm gonna see her again tomorrow though so hopefully she'll tell me what she thought then.
