Recycling Middle-Earth

I have 2 and a 1/2 reasons to start this thread.

One is to shamelessly and enthusiatically promote Otherland [ and to see who else has opinions on it], which has a prominent LotR references/usage woven in.

Anyway I just finished all 3,000 or so pages of the Otherland series and the ending esp made an awesome use of the LotR [ no spoilers folks w/ out big gaps, so no one has it ruined for them].

**And to see if any one knows the name and or Author of a book that came out maybe 10 or 12 years ago about a college frat house that had a little M-E in it's basement. 'Tolkien House' I think the frat was called.I never finished it even though I liked it well enough

and [ the 1/2 reason] to see what other books out there [ I don't read very widely in the sf/F genre as I have a zillion other neglected interests]

There was also a very clever use of Star Wars as folk myth [ in a post-techno culture]in Reign of Fire. It was very well done.

Otherland is a good series. I think that the Tolkien references found within were a nice touch, and help exemplify Tolkiens works as a driving influence on the modern Fantasy genre.

lindil, you can find a lot of suggestions for other fantasy books to read on this thread.

Stephen King's The Dark Tower series seems to me to be a reflection of LotR in a way that runs deeper than some references or ripping off the plot. In one of the books King also includes some grumbling about the deus ex machina use of 'wise f**** elves' (forgive the profanity, I'm quoting) as a plot device.
