What are we?
Over my many years (ok, a bit over 1) of being a Tolkien fan, I've heard many names given to us. Tolkienites and Ringies are the only ones i can think of. Which are we, which do you like more, can you think of any more, or any funny ones?
|
My dad called us the Ringers, i believe, a long time ago.
I assume we are just the Barrow Downers, or Downers, or more simply, the dead. We could call ourselves the Dead Downers. Which actually makes us sound like we've passed out after downing too many shots of whiskey. |
My friend Justine calls me a Lord of the Rings Trekkie.
|
Well, my friends call me a Loter. This is a derivative of LotR.
I think that's kinda funny........or not. Meh! I am an Elf. That is what I am. That is the answer to the question at the top. I am an Insane Modern She-Elf. That is what I am. Hey this would make quite good song lyrics! Namarié! Guy Who Be Short! From |
Everyone I know calls us Freaks... or maybe that's just me...
Dead Downers. Ha! I love it. |
I am a screaming-Orli-fan. Without the screaming, although you never know I guess-if I actually saw the guy... On the other hand I am also a Tolkienite, and looking through my version of a yearbook I am a "Lord of the Rings freak" and an "LOTR fanatic". I'm sure that would describe you all equally well!
|
Hmm... Tolki-Trekkies (mostly in reference to those of us who like both Tolkien and Star Trek although not always), Tolkienites, Frodo-friends, Ringers, Ringies, Frodo-freaks, Tolkien Geeks, Tolkien Freaks, Tolkien Nerds, Tolkien Dorks (I find this one more offensive than the others), and Silli-freaks (usually in reference to those that like the Silmarillion more than the Hobbit or LotR, but again, not always).
Those are the only ones that come to mind. I am partial to Tolkienite and Frodo-friends (for the sheer sound of it) myself. lol. I never really thought about it until I saw this thread though! |
I just thought of one:
The Dead Ringers. |
I wouldn't mind being called a Gandalf groupie.
|
I think I've taken a liking to "Middle-Earthlings" and "Tolkies", which I've heard off and on, but I don't think they're wholly popular terms. One term I absolutely abhor is "Tolkienites". I just cannot stand it. It rubs me the wrong way for some reason or another.

What are we? megre beings in a world of hoplessness... Or something like that...

Thats why im gald i live where i do, you know what, everyone i know likes Lotr... |
I am simply called Elf

Everyone calls me the "Lord of The Rings Freak" or that freakishly obsessed fanatic...I reply in telling people that I am "dead"

I like to call myself a "Ringer" or a "Downie",but I am rather partial to mordor136's"Gandalf Groupies".

I just call us Ringers. And I concur with Horse-Maiden's observation: us on the Downs would be Dead Ringers.
Abedithon le! |
I'm just called annoying.
|
Same here, Tinuviel of Denton!
|
I have personally never been called anything related to LOTR or Tolkien. Most of the time I just refer to myself as a really big Tolkien Fan. I do enjoy the title of Ringer though.
Hey does anyone think we could make Gandalf groupie T-shirts? |
I dont know about Gandalf.. But we should have Boromir shirts... with the slogan being "DO the wave for Boromir the disco king"...
|
Oh, I am soooo doing that! Only I'm going to be different and do Denethor the Disco Diva.

For me it's normally:
Shut-up-Elanor-you've-told-us-this-before But I call my self a Tolkienist |
Well now I'll have to refer to myself as a Dead Ringer.

Yes, Yes I agree the Downs should start work on shirts. Ooo Oooo and if we all wore our shirts for RoTK we could sit together and form a "Do The Wave.." section. I think I'm gonna design us some shirts. I am mostly called a freak. I don't care. To me, freak is a compliment. It means that you don't care what anyone thinks of you and do your own thing. I am partial to Middle-earthlings, though.

Alas, Everdawn, I live in the far off land of Montana among the Evil Hicks *gags*.

We could sell the shirts at the theater!!!
|
Or it could be that everyone knows how crazy I am and over the years have gotten used to it... Why, only yesterday i had to be called back to the land of the living twice!...
An interesting fact.. the other group of popular girls and half the footy boys are into Harry Potter, the other half are LOTR mad! and this is year 11 at high school... it must be something in the water. And guys, i would LOVE to sit with you guys wearing customised t-shirts--- if you paid for my airfare to the theatre... |
Don't worry, Everdawn, we can set up the BarrowDowns booth weeks ahead of time and use the profits from our shirt sales to pay to fly you and all the other Dead Ringers to a designated theater for the midnight showing of RotK!

What I hear for myself is along the lines of dork, freak, or "Elise! What is wrong with you?!" But anyway aside from me, since nobody cares, people here use the terms, Lord of the Rings nut, freak, or nutcase. Either that, or I'm getting WEIRD looks, or that kind of annoyed sigh.......then I imitate Gollum or break into a random song.

Ohhhh! thanks guys!!! I promise i will bring you all wallabies Jersies and stuffed kangaroos with "made in china" writtin on the tag... NOTE: If ever in AUS, do not think the stuffede kangaroos are made here, they are made by some poor child in a workshop in China... they still look cute though.
|
I'm in Canada. Where is the midnight showing? I'll bring you guys some LotR tuques and some maple syrup.
|
I'm simply a freak. *sobs into hankie* oh well, I'll get over it! I'm just the one who everybody gives queer looks when I sprout another quote.
Love the Dead Downers, except it sounds like I've commited suicide and jumped down a well. |

I like Dead Downers--though that is a bid morbid. The most common are Tolkienites and Ringies. I like either. Never have I been called a Freak. Though there is probably a good reason for that...I think people fear me and my inteligence. *sigh* It's only 7:30 and I'm already acting woosy.
In my accepted circle of friends, I'm known as "She-That-Knows-All-About-LOTR-with-its-Factors-and-Figures" very roughly translated Er-ya-hanya-arda-ar-i-lie. *sighs again* I'm going to convince one of my Rich Old Uncles to buy a lot in New Zealand where all of us Tolkienites, Ringies, Dead Downers and whatnot can wear our Wave-doing, Disco-dancing Boromir T-Shirts and live in hobbit holes. You like? -Maikafanawen Come to The Shire RPG area and join Corsairs and Corsets PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!! |
