Things that get stuck....

Anyone ever have this problem (if you would call it that?) You'll be minding your own buisness when all of the sudden something LOTRish (or for that matter Barrow-Downsish) gets stuck in your head!

1) I find myself out of the blue quoting:
a) "This is it."
"What's it?"...etc (that was movie)
b) "I think I'm getting the hang of this!"
(movie)
c) "I made a promise, Mister Frodo!"
(movie)
d) What I can remember of the lay of Gil-
Galad.

2) And the #1 thing I find stuck in my
head of late, for which I have our
dear Mr. Mithadan to thank (not that
I'm complaining, 'cause as I told him,
I thought it was completely hilarious)
was...."The Beverly Hillbillies" a la
Mithadan (Hm. The Barrowdowns
Hillbillies....?)

I always think of quotes and stuff from TLOTR. When I am with my friend Marie we are alway tanking about the books and movie.

Samwise 07-01-2002 01:38 PM

It's good to have friends you can talk about this stuff to. The other day I discovered that one of the plants in my garden was a Lobelia, and I don't know if my pastor caught the look on my face, but I'm glad I didn't have to explain, 'cause he never would have gotten it.... "You don't need to tell me that!" said Sam. "I came without any, and I've been worried ever since. But I was wondering what these were made of, knowing a bit about rope-making: it's in the family as you might say. "

A lot of times, I look at signs and mistake them for things in LOTR.

Aldagrim Proudfoot 07-02-2002 08:23 AM

I don't have that problem, darn it.

ElanorGamgee 07-02-2002 11:12 AM

Sometimes I get "gollum talk" stuck in my head, like "yesss precious," "nasssty, cruel hobbitses," "fisssshhh," "we hates it," and so on, especially if I'm mildly annoyed by something.

Samwise 07-02-2002 11:20 AM

LOL--sometimes I find myself talking/thinking Gollum talk, too. Then I try to stop myself asap so people won't think I'm nuttier than I am.
Quote:

"And I've heard tell that Elves are moving west. They do say they are going to the harbours, out away beyond the White Towers." Sam waved his arm vaguely: neither he nor any of them knew how far it was to the Sea, past the old towers beyond the western borders of the Shire. But it was an old tradition that away over there stood the Grey Havens, from which at times elven-ships set sail, never to return.

gollum*elf*pup 07-02-2002 11:30 AM

i have that gollum problem too. oh dont worry, people think i am very strange.

Morima 07-02-2002 11:42 AM

Oh. Please don't mention the Gollum thing... People think I'm raving mad cause I quote 'My Precious' all the time... But hey, the words have a very nice sound to them

ElanorGamgee 07-02-2002 11:49 AM

Hey, I'd rather be considered strange than be some people's definition of "normal." How boring

Waenfalathiel 07-02-2002 01:24 PM

i find that some things that happen remind me of lotr.
btw Morima i like your pick in your signature
where did you get it? pm me and let me know thanks.

Uruloki 07-03-2002 12:11 PM

I think everyone I know is going to hang me at our local hill if I don't stop going "My only, My precious!"
And everytime I see a black Labrador Puppy I am reminded of the Balrog coz there was this web site where someone had doctered the bridge of Moria scene so that instead of a Balrog and a whip, Gandalf had to face a black labrador puppy and a role of Andrex!
(those who hav seen the Andrex adverts will get this)

Valedain 07-03-2002 01:25 PM

When I saw Attack of the Clones, and Dooku told Obi-Wan to join him, I blurted out, "It would be wise!"

Also, "You have elected the way of pain!" is a great quote I hope to use some day.

Both from Movie Saruman, of course.

Samwise 07-03-2002 01:46 PM

Valedain, welcome to the 'Downs!
LOL--That reminds me of when, directly after we went to see LOTR-FOTR for the first time, my friend and I went to rent the DVD of Goonies. "Mikey" got this look on his face in one scene, and I yelled out,
"I made a promise, Mister Frodo...!"
Quote:

"Safely!" said Sam. "All alone and without me to help you? I couldn't have a borne it, it'd been the death of me. "

Gorothlammothiel 07-03-2002 02:54 PM

I'm always getting mixed up like that......but what can i think of to tell you now?

I called my hamsters hobbits the other day

I'm currently on work experience and was typing up payrolls for schools. One was called "Aragon Primary" and i had to refrain from putting the "r" in every time.

I've been nicknamed characters from LOTR by each of my friends because i'm always quoting, i don't even realise anymore either

Losthuniel 07-03-2002 03:01 PM

i have a gollum issue too. whenever my sister annoys me, i hiss at her, or say "Shiiiiire. Bagginssssssss"
When i saw attack of the Clones, i could almost hear Sauruman tryinmg to persuade Gandalf. it was quite funny, becuz i was with Rosseil and Naur, and we were laughing so hard, and ppl kept looking at us.

LOL--well, small fuzzy creatures...easy mistake.
Quote:

Frodo crouching over his knees heard Sam muttering and groaning: "What a place! What a horrible place! Just let me out of this boat, and I'll never wet my toes in a puddle again, let alone a river! "

Gorothlammothiel 07-03-2002 03:20 PM

I thought so too Samwise, although the fact they both begin with "h" didn't help either

Samwise 07-03-2002 04:06 PM

LOL--no it certainly dosen't!!

Sam, who had been watching his master with great concern, shook his head and muttered: "Plain as pikestaff it is, but it's no good Sam Gamgee putting in his spoke just now. "

Lothiriel Silmarien 07-04-2002 12:14 AM

Yeah I do that a lot!! I thought maybe it was just me or something. When something reminds me of LotR or someone says something that is like it, i always will do something like that. Most frequently said:
~My Precious...

~'Filthy tark'

~Fool of a Took!

~Other various quotes. Way too many to name. And including movie ones..

~Something draws near...I can feel it

~Are you frightened? (Not nearly enough sometimes is said too. Yes, I answer myself!)

~Samwise Gamgee (and other characters as well, of course )

~Aragorrrrn on of Arathorn (the 'son of' part is why I say it, to make it fancy)

And I say other things that would be 'LotRish' but are not actual sayings from it. Forgive me for being so..uncomprehendible (spell check!). It's very late and meee is toooo tired......

Losthuniel 07-04-2002 04:13 PM

my gollum moments used to REALLY freak me out, but now I'm used to it, so its not so scary. The trick is getting my family used to it.

akhtene 07-06-2002 04:39 PM

Some people can be really wierd. When I was taking my computing course, all computers in their net were named after Silmarillion characters. So I was spending most of the time just recollecting who was who (that's instead of learning something useful), while most others were doing their best simply to read those names and then to type them correctly - as sort of passwords.

Maikacairien 07-06-2002 09:28 PM

I do that all the time! whenever my sister bugs me I hiss at her and say 'My Preciousss' I'm always talking about it too. 'LotR this...' 'LotR that...' I was reading once and the book said 'Riverdale' and I kept on thinking: ' Rivendell! Oh, never mind.' i'm always dreaming about it too. its freaky!

Maikacairien 07-06-2002 09:31 PM

opps! that stuff at the end was supposed to be a picture. Oh-well!

Lady_Galadriel 07-06-2002 10:21 PM

a weird thing is that i have always hissed at my sister when i was angry at her. but now i am always finding myself quoting lotr and talking like gollum. and i cant contain myself whenever somebody offers me fish...
but my friends are all weird too, and everyone knows i am weird so it dosnt bother me. i mean i'd rather be weird, than normal... (i forget who said that, sorry)

last night it was just after midnight (wouldnt that make it morning? like today, oh well. ) my sister wouldnt shut up while i was trying to sleep. i kept yelling at her but no... just kept on talking and stuff. the next thing i find myself insulting her in elvish. i didnt even relize i remembered it until after i said it. she just stared at me and didnt say another thing to me and let me sleep. its a miricle what a few words can do. (especially if the victim doesnt know what you are saying)

Samwise 07-06-2002 10:22 PM

Hullo there,Maikacairien, welcome to our humble -- uh -- gravesite! Stick around and post lots!

It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "
(it's okay, 9 times out of 10 I can't get pics to work either!)

i was reading the newspaper, and i came across a little blurb on a chimp. Named Frodo. i was cracking up at the breakfast table, and the rest of my family was looking rather alarmed, when i read the rest of the article: the chimp had kidnapped and killed a baby girl.

Gayalondiel 07-10-2002 04:15 PM

I'm not too bad, but my boyfriend's getting annoyed: we've always called each other 'stupid', but since i heard the BBC adaptation its "No, no, stupid hobbit!" (a la Gollum). and chips are now and forever "nasssty chips".

Oh, and i'm forever confused because I live 5 miles from a village called Bamfurlong. its very confusing.

ElfEarz 08-10-2002 11:27 PM

alot of things Galadriel has said. the road goes ever on and on... (i sing that alot), its mine my own my preciousssss(hmmm) and random Elvish (i speak a little)

Gimli Son Of Gloin 08-10-2002 11:45 PM

today I was bending long thin piece of rubber for no particular reson. My dad came up to me and said, "What's that?". I replied, "this, my friend, is a pint.

Luinsewiel 08-11-2002 04:52 PM

Did you know over half the population is weird which makes them normal but then.... ack my head hurts. I hiss at everyone.. I thought it was normal

suicidal elf chick 08-11-2002 05:46 PM

Sometimes, I find myself quoting Gollum... And aloud, too, so that people can hear me. They look at me weirdly and back away...

Ms. Took 08-11-2002 11:36 PM

my mom used to always refer to my dog as preciouse, but she stopped cuz every time she said "precious," I'd grab my dog and rock back and forth and say "my own, my love, my...preciousssss" and i think it freaked her out. and whenever she asks me to get something for her i say "if you want it, come and claim it!"

Melephelwen 08-13-2002 06:22 AM

I usually keep myself from saying aloud, but I can really have a hard time not saying "instead of a dark lord you would have a queen etc." or "don't you lose him Samwise Gamgee" - I could go on forever. And I keep calling my computer 'precious', but I think that counts for everyone...

Galadriel55 12-10-2010 06:59 PM

My friends think I'm very weird (I can tell by their faces), when I say what their names mean in Elvish. Well, I can't help it if I know people named Ellen, Laurel, Arielle, Melanie, and many others like that!
Also, sometimes this very annoying thing happens to me when I forget a LOTR name, or I remember the quote but can't recall who said it. Very often, if I have this sudden answer come into my head, I say aloud "ninnyhammer! it's this (whatever the answer is)!"
When my sister and brother annoy me, I tell them to stop acting out Gollums, or I'll hurts them, yessss, with cruel cold sssteel. It's lucky that they know what I'm talking about, since they have a (*cough cough... VERY*) general idea about LOTR.
