Frodo's Original name
Did you know that the name Tolkien originally thought of for Frodo was
'Bingo-Bolger Baggins'!! But then as the story became more serious he changed it to Frodo which was the name he had originally given to one of his travelling companions. He got the name Frodo from some Iclandic king in Beowolf who was called Frodi [ November 19, 2002: Message edited by: busybee ] |
YOU ARE SSSSOOOOOOOO KIDDING ME???!!! I am glad that Tolkien decided to go with Frodo instead. Where did you find that out?
|
Just look in HoME Return of the Shadow for JRRT's earlier ideas about Hobbits and the Shire.

Yeah, I remember that. i read it in an old copy of a tolkien quiz book. Also, Aragorns origional name 9instead of Strider) was trotter!
|
Trotter?? I like the name Strider; it sounds cool, but Trotter?!
Arwen |
Trotter the Ranger Hobbit!
|
Trotter! That sounds way to funny for someone as serious as Aragorn...i mean trotter....makes him sound like a pig.
Actually i got it in The Magical Worlds of Lord of the Rings. It also has other fascinating factoids such as this so go buy it at a bookstore near you! Should i put some more in another thread or just here? |
You know the real spellings of everything Hobbitish? If not, read here:
The Shire: Sūza Took: Tūk Boffin: Bophīn Sam: Banazīr The Gaffer (Ham): Ranugad Hobbit: Kuduk Gamgee: Galbasi Cotton: Hlothran Brandywine: Branda-nīn |
Do not forget that, in Westron, Frodo's name is actually Froda and Bilbo's name Bilba. Masculine names end in an "a".
|
Better than Dildo Baggins from Bored Of The Rings *chuckle*
*note* useless post needed to change my avatar. |
Froda in Welsh or either Icelandic meant Wise, Learned.
|
Oh, and some more Westron language...
Frodo Baggins: Maura Labingi Peregrin "Pippin" Took: Razanur "Razar" Tūc Samwise "Sam" Gamgee: Banazīr "Ban" Galbasi Mariadoc "Merry" Brandybuck: Kalimac "Kali" Brandagamba Dwarf: Narag Rivendell: Karningul Bag-End: Laban-neg Burrahobbit: Rāphabanakil Butterburr: Zilbirāpha Just a thought of some. trotter...soooo funny |
Merry was Marmaduke, and pippin was Vigo, which I think of as very weird.
|
Funnier yet, Trotter's real name was Peregrin (Perry for short) and he wore wooden shoes to hide his mutilated feet!!
Pippin went through many names before he became Pippin (and thanks BOB for that!!) Heh. maybe I'll check how the names come out in Hebrew... |
