Of the necromancer

Sorry if this is a stupid question to all you learned people in the field of middle earth, but in the book 'the hobbit', Gandulf and the dwarves mention the necromancer. He seems to have disapeared in LOTR though, or is he Sauron.

Sorry, I have probably got everyhting confused.

Welcome, Woody.
That's not a stupid question. Yes, the Necromancer from the Hobbit is later discovered to be Sauron.

Thanks Obloguy, I have been wondering about that for a while. I must have missed it out LOTR, do you mind telling me where it is?
Thanks

From 'The Council of Elrond', spoken by Gandalf

Quote:

'Some here will remember that many years ago I myself dared to pass the doors of the Necromancer in Dol Guldur, and secretly explored his ways, and found thus that our fears were true: he was none other than Sauron, our Enemy of old, at length taking shape and power again.
