Hello all,
How old was Gollum when he fell into the fire of Sammath Naur? I get something like 565 years old, or so. Can anyone correct this, or concur?

Re: Sméagol's Age

Does it give his birthdate anywhere? It was 556 years from the time he murdered Déagol to his own death. Assuming they were both fairly young at that time, 589 sounds about right.

Re: Sméagol's Age

I don't remember where I heard it, but Smeagol was 33 when found the ring, count all the years to 3019, and you get his age!

...he heard Theodred's great voice cry "To me, Eorlingas!"</p>

Thanks!

I was in the ball park, so to speak.
Where might I read for myself this thirty-three year old information? Sounds like a Christ reference.

Re: Sméagol's Age

But that was how old frodo was when he got the ring. Is it a coincidence or did you get them mixed up?

Re: Sméagol's Age

How do you prounounce Sméagol? SH-MEE-GUL, SH-MEE-GEL, S-MEE-GUL, S-MEE-GEL?

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."</p>

Re: Sméagol's Age

I pronounce it SMEE-GULL. I think 589 sounds about right to me. After the evidence against him being 33 when he stole the ring I think that he is late 580's, early 590's. Wouldn't that make him the oldest living hobbit, seeing has he originated as a hobbit of sorts?

I always pronounced it SMAYGOL, never knowing if that was correct or not.

Re: Sméagol's Age

I don't know the origions of the term smeagol but if it is quenay then instead of the -ea- bing pronouned as a diphthong (along with eo, ie, io, oa, etc) each letter us pronounced distinctly

SMEE-A-GOL perhaps?

I am not that well-verse in quenay so I may be wrong <img src=frown.gif ALT=":(">

Re: Sméagol's Age

It isn't Quenya, it's (probably modernized) Ancient English (IIRC vaguely related to smial, both containing the root 'burrow').

old hobbit

I pronounce the vowels separately, as indicated in the note on pronunciation.

The first long -é- I soften to rhyme with english &quot;may,&quot; and the -a- I flatten to an -æ- to rhyme with &quot;mat.&quot;

Smay-æ-goal, yesss my precioussss. We all give him that cartoon hiss though, I suppose <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

I like Theo's suggestion SHMEE - GOL though, sounds like a Jewish pastry. &lt;Have a bit of shmeegol.&gt;

Have any of you heard the audio of &quot;Herbs and stewed Rabbit&quot; that JRRT Himself read?
It has both Sam, Frodo and Smeagol himself pronouncing it SMEE-GOL!

Funny, isn't it, how the Ring seems to mimic elven longevity.
