Talking Eagles
Hello all. I was just thinking to myself...If PJ holds true to the third book, and Gwaihir does show up to offer his assistance to Gandalf, how are they going to make Gwaihir talk without making it look too cheesy? Or maybe he won't have Gwaihir talk at all? What do you think?

'If PJ holds true to the third book', well MY GOD, THAT would be a novelty'

...moving this movie topic to the Movies forum...

I don't know, but my guess is the Eagles won't talk for the reason you gave. That is if they are even there.
H.C.

They probibly won't be in ROTK. After all, they still have to have to show Shelob, and Isenguard, and Mt. Doom, and the Battle of Pelinor Fields(sorry, I can't spell) and well, yah, somehow I think the eagles won't make an apperence. But we can still hope(though I think it will like in FOTR when I held out for the first hour of the movie, hoping that Tom Bombadill would show up )

Well maybe he could do something like they did for the movie BABE or Cats & Dogs....can`t wait to see great Gwaihir in action

It shouldn't be too hard to make the eagle speak and not make it cheesy. I think so, anyway. After all, it IS a fantasy movie. And how would Gandalf had told the eagle where he wanted to go in FotR if it didn't understand the Common Tongue or at least Elvish? And if it can understand either language, why not be able to speak it? And, since having it speak Elvish would probably be too much trouble, they may have him speak Common. That is, as previously said, if they have the Eagles at all. Or my logic could just be clouded by cold medicine.

I'm glad you brought this up, Peri, and not just so that I could see your avatar (picture thingy below your name)!
If you've read the Silmarillion (if you haven't, then do!), Glaurung is one of the most obvious cases of a creature talking. But I have always pictured him as not speaking with his mouth, just telepathically, the way Galadriel sometimes does in the movies (called Osanwë-Kenta by Tolkien).
I haven't seen Cats&Dogs, but it looks pretty crap. And I'd have to say that the way the animals talked was the worst thing about the Dr. Doolittle movies. I think the Eagles would look cool just showing body language, with their heads and eyes, and their voices just coming out of nowhere. If their lips move, I'm leaving!

If their not in the movie then how will Sam and Frodo get back from Mordor to Cormallen? Catch the train? Be rescued by Arwen?
[ February 22, 2003: Message edited by: Inderjit Sanghera ]

I don't see any problem with at least one eagle showing up to rescue Sam and Frodo. I think it would round off things neatly, especially as Gandalf has already been rescued himself in FOTR.
As far as talking is concerned who knows? gandalf speaks to the moth that speaks to the eagle. Presumably the eagle could squeak a bit and Gandalf translate?
