Saruman plays with crayons?

Something has been bugging me in the movie LOTR. When the fellowship is discussing whether to go through Moria or not, Saruman is turning the pages in a book. Everything in it is black on white pages EXCEPT when he comes to the picture of the Balrog. That has colour on it.
So I've been thinking: Toddler Saruman was bored, found a book with a nice picture in it, and decided to play with his crayons?

Samwise 03-12-2002 07:05 PM

Ehhhh....why is it that all of you folks seem to notice these kinds of things and I don't? Sigh. Guess I was too busy making sure Sean Astin played my Sam right....

quote:
Suddenly a low voice murmured:
"Gil-Galad was an elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.
His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of Heaven's feild
were mirrored in his silver shield..
But long ago he rode away
and where he dwelleth none can say
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are. "
The others turned in amazement, for the voice was Sam's.

ElanorGamgee 03-12-2002 07:12 PM

Ha, ha, that's funny!
"Oooo, pwetty Balwog!"
I wonder if he colored the living room wall as well?

Aralaithiel 03-12-2002 07:46 PM

I'll bet he drew cartoons and made snowmen like Calvin did in that wonderful cartoon strip "Calvin & Hobbes."

Brimstone Goldenwing 03-12-2002 07:58 PM

Mhahaha! I never noticed that! Don't worry Samwise I never notice those things either..maybe the next time I watch it I'll look more closely

Kalimac 03-12-2002 09:37 PM

Actually, I'd thought the book was like one of those illuminated manuscripts - mostly done in black ink but with the occasional vividly-colored picture (the Harrowing of Hell, say, or something suitably dramatic) thrown in. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough - were there other black-and-white drawings in there?
Though since you mention it, you have to wonder what sort of color names Middle-Earth Crayola would use..."Orthanc Black" "Moria Black" (a bit more ash-color to it than Orthanc Black) "Elvenwhite" "Balrog Crimson" "Helm's Deep Crimson" ...maybe not.

Glenethor 03-12-2002 10:24 PM

Thing is, I've seen that pic of the Balrog before, so I think it is by one of the more famous LoTR illustrators. They did this a few times: The trolls are straight from a drawing (Howe?) as are many scenes in the movie. Anyway, I know I've seen that pic before, and think that they knew that many fans would know it. Hence, they put it into the manuscript Saruman was reading...Shadow...and Flame

Birdland 03-13-2002 06:14 AM

Yes, I'm sure Saruman played with crayons.
I also heard he eats paste.

the_master_of_puppets 03-13-2002 12:52 PM

isnt it just done like that to make an emphasis on the significance of Balrogs to the plot? kind of like fore-shadowing

Amanaduial the archer 03-13-2002 12:57 PM

omg u ppl actually sit there taking notes or summit?!jeez, i hav a copy of lotr and i never noticed!neway, those flames wud kinda luk vvvvvvv unreal without color!but yeah, i mean maybe he got bored and decided 2 do colouring!orcs probly doant exactly make stimulating convo!
lol
me

Maikadilwen 03-13-2002 01:41 PM

Nope I don't sit there making notes. I just have a good memory. And, after all, if you've seen the movie 15 times, you start making out all the little details, so....

starbreeze 03-13-2002 02:15 PM

Tee hee heee
Just imagine all the pwetty colours!

Teleliniel 03-13-2002 02:44 PM

im betting he used crayola....

Aralaithiel 03-13-2002 02:45 PM

And, don't forget Gandalf gray, Gil-Galad silver, and Samwise's Middle-Earth tones!
Oh...and of course, my favorite, Lothlorien blue! It glows!

Samwise 03-13-2002 04:26 PM

quote:
Don't worry Samwise I never notice those things either..

Thanks much, Brimstone. O' course, I have only seen the movie once. Oh, well. Who knows, maybe someday....

quote:
"You'd better be hidden, Mr. Frodo." said Sam. "We'll send this rider to the rightabouts! "

Daegwenn 03-13-2002 07:31 PM

I noticed it but hadn't thought too much of it until now...
Can you imagine Sarumon getting scolded by his mother for marking on the walls? *snickers*
Little Sarumon looked up, his blue eyes wide with the well-practised innocent sincerity of a four year old as he held his Moria black crayola behind his back. "I is sowwy movver..." he sniffled "I pwomis never to do it again..."
His mother looked at the walls that were marred with the nonsensical black scribblings of her little child and then looked down at her sniffling son. "It's alright little one.." She sighed hopelessly, giving in to her son's trembling chin and big blue eyes...
~~Daegwenn

ElanorGamgee 03-13-2002 10:08 PM

I'll bet Saruman never got in trouble for coloring on the living room wall, having that convincing voice and all...
"Mommy, I was just adding to the color scheme. Doesn't it look lovely?"
"Well, now that you mention it, the red scribles do go well with the curtains..."
[ March 13, 2002: Message edited by: ElanorGamgee ]

1. Saruman has black eyes
2. Saruman has never been a kid let alone a baby and he has no mother can't imagine it either...

Susan Delgado 06-20-2002 05:59 PM

Come on, Morima. Of course they know Saruman had black eyes and no mother (actually, we don't know for certain if the Maiar have parents/children or not ). They were just having fun. Get in the spirit of it

Legolas 06-20-2002 06:22 PM

Everyone likes crayons - don't you know anything?!

Frodo Baggins 06-21-2002 10:20 AM

Its ok Sam. I saw the movie rwice and was too enamoured to notice too mant details.

Arwen Imladris 06-21-2002 11:11 AM

It is O.K. all of you folks who, like me, missed all of the details. It is O.K. to be too enthraled with a movie to notice things like that. We probebly got more out of the movie!
Saruman with crayons? Now that would be funny to see!
hahahahahehehahaaaa

Elfchick 06-21-2002 12:39 PM

lets put it this way
That palantir was not always that color!
Not to mention Sauraman changed his name to Sauraman of many colors.

Mornie Alantie 06-21-2002 01:59 PM

I think it cause the only other pic in the book that you see is Morias door which doesn't have color, and the rest of the book is words. That you see anyway.
Saruman, in a little kid like voice,
"Eewww yucky plain Nazgul, I make it a pretty pink color!"
or
"My bestest friend is gwey, I makes him likes thwe wanbow.

Morima 07-03-2002 04:14 PM

Hahaha! Aw right Susan, this is kinda funny after all!

Orofacion of the Vanyar 07-03-2002 04:34 PM

I believe the real question is...
Did he eat the crayons?
A mouth full of crayola, with various colors stained around his mouth.

Morima 07-03-2002 04:39 PM

LOL as I picture it!!
Then he would indeed have been Many-Colored, at least his beard!

Ithaeliel 07-03-2002 05:55 PM

Crayons bug me. I like colored pencils better.

Rosseiliantiel 07-10-2002 09:45 AM

crayons snap. we like snap!
Poor Little Saruman must've been very bored, being stuck in that tower all day. So he was rummaging around and found a nice pack of crayons. Well, he thought that old Balrog needed some colour, so he pulled out 'Sauron's Eye Orange', 'Balrog Red' and 'Moria Black', and, well, things just sort of went from there.

Aragost 07-10-2002 01:21 PM

Saruman the toddler,"Icky white orkses, I makes them a pwetty yewwow.I color pwain Elwand a nice pwurple.

The Silver-shod Muse 07-10-2002 01:30 PM

Morima 07-11-2002 03:22 PM

Oh, sorry, my mistake. I just believed he had some sort of whitish kinda beard when he flipped through that book in the movie.

polices 05-18-2003 06:47 PM

Don't despare Samwise I never notice stuff like that either.

MLD-Grounds-Keeper-Willie 05-19-2003 01:01 AM

AHAHA, what a hilarious thread!

quote:
I'll bet he drew cartoons and made snowmen like Calvin did in that wonderful cartoon strip "Calvin & Hobbes."

Haha, I bet he was like Calvin when Calvin was reading through the dinosaur book and decided to dress up like a terodactyl(sp?) and fly off the roof before his mom figured out what was going on. He was probably reading through the book and saw the balrog. Then he lights himself on fire and goes to the top of Orthanc and it would read, "The giant Balrog Saruman spreads his wings and..." While Grima scurries to the top of Orthanc to save him. And besides it would be more suiting for him since he would plummet to his death as the Balrog did (with wings I might add) (although, I do believe that Balrogs can fly)...Silly Saruman ...

Meela 05-19-2003 07:53 AM

Ha ha. Toddler Saruman. Chewed on the evil blue crayon and pfft! Evil Saruman was created.

Legolas 05-19-2003 10:49 AM

Shy Hobbit 05-19-2003 04:28 PM

*laughs insanely* This is too good! *will look at anything that pokes fun at Saruman*
Of course he played with crayons! That's how he became Saruman of Many Colors

The Only Real Estel 05-19-2003 04:35 PM

Yeah, I saw that when I watched the movie...but I didn't think much of it; after all, who cares if the page is colored or not?

Niluial 05-19-2003 10:15 PM
