Of course it is possible to read LotR and enjoy it for what it is, a highly enertaining book. I don't think Tolkien tried to make a statement or to preach anything, he wanted to write a great story....

I dislike Sam because of the way he acted against Smeagol. And there was something about his attitude I didn't like.
And good/bad doesn't matter at all, interesting/uninteresting character does.
