Wouldn't the plusses of crossbows cited above make
them advantageous also, not just for dwarves and
orcs, but also for the comparatively advanced
technology of Gondor? Useful in defending cities...

I would think a devastating dwarf weapon,
especially for use against cavalry would be
something akin to the Swiss halberd.
Obviously shortened for Middle-earth dwarf use.
