Simple: Eowyn wanted to battle because she had mental problems. It began when she was a baby and Theoden accidentally dropped her, which made her dad really mad so he kicked Theoden, causing Theoden to trip and crash right onto Eowyn, who but being a baby, just got a real mental problem. Then she heard the Nazgul and thought it was her mommy calling her, so she went along just to find her 'mommy.' Merry sensed that Eowyn had mental problems, so he just went along with Eowyn to make sure she didn't do anything crazy. Unfortunately, she did decide to try killing her 'mommy' because the Nazgul screeched and she didn't like the 'song,' so Merry had to help her.
