I am not sure if this is exactly the right forum to place this in, but it seemed to be alright to me.

A question has tugged at my mind for a long time now, ever since I started reading LOTR.

How far, in comparison to the United States of America, is the distance from the Shire to Mordor?

I, for some reason, have an idea in my head that the length of the quest is the size of the entire stretch of the U.S.A.

Does anyone know for sure or have a guess?
