Well, simply because the Dwarves are the best iorworkers in middle earth. Thingol asked us for our help in preparing Thangrodrim. Simply we are natural talented in such things. Similar to Elves and their mastery of archery. They have no need of such aromr because they try to fight from a distance. Dwarves are really up close and personal, so the thicker the armor the better.
