The Ruling Ring has just left Hobbiton.

Fededhor looked back at the Pherdur for an instant as he walked away, then looked back at the girl. He took her shoulder lightly.

"Listen," he said, "we have much trouble already, and we don't need some maid of orcs coming along and fouling the waters already fouled by those monsters. I believe that I should believe you. And so, I do. But if I find that you are lying," he paused, mostly for dramatic emphasis, and his mind flitted to an image of his brother and his sister-in-law, their children clutched close, in a den of filth, as orcs pitched rocks at them, "you will be returned to your head of station, and he will surely be told that you have failed him."

He released her shoulder, turning back to the men.

"It's alright," he said, feeling like he was stating the obvious. "She is no threat. Pherdur is leaving now, though," he furrowed his brow, looking about and around him. "He needs two more to go with him. Who else shall I be unfortunate enough to lose?"

Pirk gritted his teeth, leaning against the wall of the cave, looking out of it at the trees that surrounded its clearing.

He sharpened one blade with another, sporadically chipping off bits of the corners of his fingernails. Pirk liked cutting his nails with his knife, but he tried not to cut them too short or blunt--sharp nails were very useful.

He straightened up, looking back into the darkness behind him. He saw, far inside the cave, a human woman, kneeling over the prostrate form of a human man. In the shadows, only his feet were visible, but these were intriguing enough to make Pirk come back into the cave. Those boots...

It was a soldier! A human soldier! Pirk fairly clasped his hands together tight in glee, then grabbed the woman roughly, tossing her aside.

"Hiding my treasure, are you?" he asked rhetorically, pulling his blade up and raising it over the man's body. He'd teach those tarks to run after him. He'd leave this one's body out to dry in the sun, for the aiding soldiers to see, when they came.
