Wow, I think I deserve a prize for "most confusing person on the Barrow-Downs." Some clarification. Hithduiniel and Lenilos, being Laiquendi, are of course starting from Ossiriand. I concieved of them as living near a rather obscure edge of the forest. The brigands are somewhat lost but know, I think, that they want a completely different part of Ossiriand, the one where they expect to find Beren and Luthien (and good luck to them, heh). My understanding was that they would get out of the forest as quickly as possible, since they realize that it's occupied by a lot of people who aren't likely think much of them and might well raise an alarm (or an army). So they wanted (in my idea that I somehow imagined that everyone was sharing with me) wanted to skirt the edges until they came close to where they wanted to be. This will be difficult, of course, since they don't know where that may be.. I guess they could try asking Hithduiniel if they're desperate.
Please note, also, that "treeless" is a relative term; even the sparser edges of the forest begin to look a little like a savannah when you're a Green Elf.
Not a bad introduction, Childlike Empress. He seems very young, but that's quite suitable, since Hithduiniel's unusual point of view is an important part of her character and I don't see why it shouldn't be part of her brother's as well, and he definitely comes off as a brother of hers!
Before attempting to steal any horses, though, I'd advise you to consider the fate of the previous group of horse thieves....
