I myself think that the Silmarils had a power, what kind i'm not quite sure. In the Silmarillion when Carcharoth the Wolf of Angband wandered into Doriath after swallowing the Silmaril it says, "the might of Melian upon the borders of the land stayed him not; for fate drove him, and the power of the Silmaril that he bore to his torment". As for the Silmarils causing more harm then good, well it wasn't the jewels themselves that caused grief it was the envy and want of them. Hey burrahobbit where in OK are you from?
