Well, I think that the way of sleeping with their eyes open and all, are not a defensive thing. I think that the elves can choose if how they want to sleep, and if they sleep like we do (eccept you VanimaEdhel) then they don't have to sleep as long to get the same amount of energy, as if they rest in the other way... Did you get that one, it sounds a little confusing to me, but I think I got it right.
