Re: Are the movies a good or bad thing?

Lorien Wanderer, I don't think that's going to happen.

I saw the animated hobbit several times before I read the book, and, though some imagry did stick in my mind, I still applied my own imagination to the characters and places as I read the text.

Most people are going to do this, with only the week-minded few submitting totally to Jackson's view. And I'm thinking that these people are unlikely to pick up a book in the first place. Let alone three!!

I feel that these movies are going to fill the gap between the 70's and today. The gap that has grown wider each year as more and more people become unaware of the existence of Middle-Earth. Nobody's heard of JRR Tolkien anymore. But now they will. And suddenly there will be thousands of new readers running to the bookstores. And thousands of old readers reaquainting themsleves with an old friend.

Watch this forum grow after the first trailer. Then be prepared for an explosion of growth next Christmas. Let's think of it as our duty to educate those people that come here. To let them in in on the things that Jackson will be forced to leave out.
The Barrow-Wight (RKittle)
I usually haunt The Barrow-Downs and The Barrow-Downs Middle-Earth Discussion Board.
