I think as for magic, elves define it differently. Luthien was a tremendous minstrel, who could put Morgoth himself under with her song. Fingon battles Sauron in a tune. Perhaps Galadriel could rend the stone of the walls with a song that spoke against them. Words are powerful in ME. Gandalf's magic seems to be partially word-activated. What Galadriel did probably wouldnt be magic to elves, but to us it certainly would be!
