Boromir didn't try to kill Frodo. He desired the Ring, in order to do good for Gondor, and the Ring was clouding his judgement, but his motive was not to hurt Frodo. I've read the books over twenty times, and I never once thought that Boromir intended serious harm to Frodo. If he wanted to kill Frodo, he could have just taken out his sword and killed him before Frodo could do anything. They were alone, after all. Boromir was never evil, just misled by a human weakness, and I think he would never have harmed him.
