An interesting discussion, albeit not very deep. But it all goes to show that Tolkien knew what he was doing. Not just one bad guy but a series to keep tension in the stories and to give us some suspense. At times the up-close bad guy makes us forget about the faraway bad guy, Morgoth. You can't have the master bad guy on the scene all the time or in each and every scene. Just one more piece of evidence that Tolkien knew very well how a story goes together.
