And context is very important. I just don't think Tolkien's Gandalf would have sat there saying a lot of pretty words to Pippin to console him. He was a tough cookie, hard but fair, and never gave anyone meaningless words of comfort. And as he well knew that Pippin was not bound for the Undying Lands, he would not have told him he was going there.
