Orcs seem like the type of nice folk who would brand people for no good reason at all...perhaps so that they could identify escaped prisnors? Anyway, it wasn't in the book that I remember, but it would be an interesting touch by PJ...it's not like it comes into play later anyways. That's assuming that it <B>is</B> indeed in the shape on an eye, which is hard to tell. If we only had a close-up...
