In LotR, I was stirred by the scene where Sam, believing Frodo is dead, has to leave him at Cirith Ungol (why doesn't that look like it's spelled right?). I don't have the book to quote anything directly, but I was very moved by his words in that passage.

I haven't read the Sil in a while, but I remember being torn apart by the stories of Maedhros and Maglor. Tolkien's style and words throughout these tales were beautiful and haunting.
