As for the comparison between Númenor and Atlantis, it is made even more clear in the Akallabêth (Silmarillion), where we are told that Númenor was later called Atalantë, meaning "The Downfallen", the Quenya equivalent to Akallabêth (Númenórean word, same meaning).
