Definately one book. I read it as one book and although I had meant to stop at the end of the first 'section' I just couldn't. The first book just doesn't have a real
ending. It's not intended to be read on it's own.
A trilogy is three seperate books, that you'd understand if you started on the second or the third; though of course with any series of books it's best to read them in chronological order. <img src=smile.gif ALT="
