It might help with the animation alot if they get more room that they have for fire to move around and also with a slit for a eye looks more mystical then if they had done a normal human resemblance of a eye. If they had tried to over do it it might look like he might not of ever been who he was if they over did the eye it might make him some mystical creature. I think they did a very well done job of sauron and other characters they put alot of thought into this movie. Most books that become movies they dont even come close to the book. I think they did a very well done job.
