This is certainly true. But there is one much earlier note that has always intrigued me. From the outlining for the Tale of Earendil in BoLT:

Tree-men. It is impossible to guess what lay behind these words. But one can at least speculate that Tolkien
may have had a vague idea about tree-like people very early on.
