They wouldn't be able to simply over-run the Balrog because of their numbers. Their weapons would have been no use (remember Aragorn and Boromir trying to join Gandalf in the fight, they wouldn't have been able to do anything). It would take someone like Gandalf, or a powerful elf lord/lady like Glorfindel, Galadriel, or possibly Elrond.
