I thought the Silmarillion was sheer genius...I loved the rich and complex history and mythology that Tolkien wove in it and was duly impressed with the fact that he came up with complete geography, history, languages, and characters by himself.It really helped shed some light on the events the characters in LOTR referred to and why they behaved the way they did.Tolkien truly had a great mind and the Silmarillion confirmed that.
