m-mm, would it help to consider the whole as a 'journey', and the Hobbit as the path where the road begins? In the light of Bilbo's:

If you look back from the summit,
all the way you've come will make part of the 'journey to the mountains', not only the path that lead you up from mountain's immediate foot.
