Same in the book as the film. It's a difficult choice, but Gandalf feels it needs to be done. It's as you say in your point above. No one else could save him so Gandalf felt he had to try. Evil will come of it in the book as well. The gates were broke and it was only a matter of time before the forces of evil entered. So no real difference.....
