Now this one I like. I was discussing with my brother last night what constitutes the English national identity and we both agreed that, as far as external perceptions are concerned, the reserved, stiff upper lip, John Cleese-type probably best suits the bill. Although it really only applies in any meaningful way to a small minority of the British population.
Having said that, I am fully licensed by the Ministry of Silly Walks and tend to be paranoid about (and unsuccessful at) not mentioning the war when in the company of Germans.
